Dogs on Course in North America By Jim Mills No rule changes are planned for the 2008 DOCNA agility trial season. DOCNA’s Rule Committee includes one judge, two competitors (currently one member from the East and one member from the West; in the future we may add representatives from other regions), one club contact, and one representative, all DOCNA members.The purpose of this ﬁve-member team is to discuss competitor suggestions and submissions on possible future rule adjustments or tweaks for the 2008-2009 agility season and beyond. Competitors may submit suggestions to rulescommittee@docna.com. Over the next year this volunteer team will work with competitors and members of our Yahoo group site (http://groups.yahoo. com/group/DogsOnCourseinNorthAmerica), an open forum to discuss DOCNA agility. The rule committee will oversee suggestions and submissions as well as solicit input from competitors before making any changes. Each submission will go through a process of determining how any change will beneﬁt and/or affect competitors, dogs, jump heights, divisions, levels, physically challenged competitors or dogs, North American regions, trial software and the DOCNA database, and so on. Above all, common sense must prevail. The DOCNA Mission Statement states:“Dogs on Course in North America will support an open line of communication for any proposed changes. This communication will involve solicitation and consideration of feedback and explanation of decisions.” For the 20082009 agility season, DOCNA is acting on our mission statement by soliciting feedback from competitors and clubs in a few different ways. We will be distributing random questionnaires (ﬁve per trial) at each trial.The club will hand these out in an envelope and the surveys will ask how DOCNA is doing and what do competitors see at trials, and so on. The rule committee will review the questionnaires and either answer the questions or bring the comments to the list if warranted. Also the club’s ﬁnal report to DOCNA, which asks for general feedback, will be considered after each trial. Clubs will be asked to really put some thought into how we can improve.Last, the 2008-2009 DOCNA agility premiums will include the statement,“Please send your feedback to rulescommittee@docna.com.” You cannot please everyone.What you can do is listen, ask for advice, look at effects, explain what you have found, ask for additional input, suggest an idea, get feedback, and explain all decisions. There were 36 dogs entered that were over 10 years old and 25 of those were eligible for Double Digit Awards! There was a “new” class of Gaters run at the event and there were 152 entries into a class that people were willing to “try out”—that has got to make one smile (at least it really makes me smile). There were 36 “Superdogs” entered in the SuperStakes classes that were going for an accumulation of 15 scores to be added together for an overall SuperDog score.They ranged Clean Run | October 07 80
