three different locations during the season. At the end of each season, we give out a commemorative item to each participant (tee shirts and sport bags, so far) and several special awards. Besides the competitive awards, like highest scoring team, we give out some to recognize unique contributions to the fun of agility. For example, each club representative nominates someone from his or her club to be the MVP (Most Valuable Puppy)—with the criteria left up to the representative. Some MVP awards were awarded to the dogs with the best scores: one went to a dog and handler who had improved the most over the course of the season, and one was given to a dog and handler who had showed extraordinary teamwork on the course. Other awards have included the Sir Edmund Hilary Award for the best perching on top of the A-frame, the Harry Houdini Award for the dog that did the best escapes from the ring, and the Most Improved Award for the dog that stopped picking up cones during his runs. Awards are given for performance, teamwork, and simply fo r t h e f u n t h a t a dog and/or handler brought to the group. When the CDAFG began in November 2005, there were 4 participating clubs and 25 exhibitors. Last year, the group grew to include 5 clubs and 62 participants; for the first time, we had to turn entries away. In November 2008, we added one more club. Roughly 60% of the runs at each match get a score, while the remainder were not scored due to training in the ring. The CDAFG even inspired creation of a league in southeastern Vermont last year. Your league can be successful, too. It takes time, effort, and planning. With a good team and the right attitude, an agility league offers substantial benefit to handlers and dogs alike, while also providing a chance to meet new people and experience new challenges.
