There are two different philosophies about cueing back up. Some people prefer to give the cue once and expect the dog to continue to back up until told to stop. Others repeat Back, Back, Back or Beep, Beep, Beep the entire time they want the dog to back up. Either way is fine, as long as the dog clearly understands what you expect. Step 4 As soon as the dog is stepping back onto the towel with both back feet, you can start to move the towel back and increase the distance. At first the increases should be small, from 1" or 2" to 6" or so, adding a tiny bit of distance each time the dog is successful two or three times in a row. Building the initial behavior slowly and methodically is very important. The biggest problem people run into when teaching a dog to back up is the dog either starts to back up in a big curve; or the dog “cheats” and keeps looking over his shoulder while backing up; or backs up a couple of steps, stops to look back, then continues. Working on the early stages carefully can prevent these problems. The dog is learning to focus on you and the food in your hands while backing up, because the behavior ends when you toss the food, something the dog does not want to miss. By focusing on your hands, the dog is learning to back up without looking back and to trust that when you ask him to back up there will always be a target there to back up to. If at any time the dog does curve or look back, break off the exercise, call the dog back to your hands, and start over. Never reward the dog for backing if the dog stops focusing forward or starts curving. Backing up is an excellent trick for using up energy and working muscles when the weather is not optimum for outdoor exercise. Proudly made in the U.S.A October 09 | Clean Run
