What’s My
This month our three handlers—Greg Derrett, Rachel Sanders, and Jane Simmons-Moake—with different styles of handling analyze the same course and share their handling strategies. The course, shown in Figure 1, is a USDAA Triathlon Finals course.

Greg Derrett has competed in agility since the late 1980s and has won many national finals in Great Britain. He has represented his country at several different world events as a competitor and team manager, and has an advanced studies diploma in animal behavior. Several of his clients have won national finals in various countries and gold medals in international competitions. Greg has four videos on agility training for sale and he also offers online lessons. Greg lives in the U.K. with his wife, Laura, and their seven Border Collies and runs the organization UK Agility. Figure 2 shows my interpretation of the dog’s theoretical line. From #1-#2 is a straight line; from #2-#3, a slight left turn; from #3-#4 is a left turn; from #4-#5 is a right turn; then a left turn just before or just after entering the #5 tunnel. From #5-#6 is a straight line and from #6-#7, a right turn. From #7-#8 is another right turn, followed by a left turn. From #8-#9 is a right turn, followed by a straight line from #9-#10. It’s a straight line from the #10 tunnel to the #11 weaves and a slight left turn out of the weaves to #12. From #12-#13 is a straight line, with a 180° right turn from #13-#14. From #14-#15 is a left turn; and from #15-#16 as well as from #16-#17 are both right turns.

Obstacles #1-#5 The dog should be set up to create a straight line from #1-#2. I lead out with the dog on the right to a position just past #2. As I release the dog I move forward to get extension. When the dog is committed to #2, I rotate left (controlling the turn from #2-#3) and run the diagonal line from #3-#4 shown in Figure 3. As the dog commits to #3 a front cross controls the left turn from #3-#4. The right turn from #4-#5 can be controlled by shoulder rotation, with the dog driving into the tunnel. If I decide on course
