Be sure to do all the steps with your dog on your left as well as your right. Also, frequently change the side of the table you approach. In general, stand very still when releasing your dog off the table, but move around while your dog is on the table. You should watch your dog at all times so that you can mark the instant his elbows and hocks touch the table. Once your dog is in a down on the table his feet don’t move until he hears his release word. If your dog gets up repeatedly, you are probably moving too much for too long without enough rewards. At any time, if your dog leaves the table before hearing his release word, don’t say anything; just stand next to the table and, without moving, wait for him to get on the table and lie down. Don’t give your dog a reward for getting off the table. You want all your rewards to be for getting on and staying on.

For recalls, put your dog in a stay at the jump, go several feet past the far side of the table and release your dog to the jump as shown in Figure 11. As soon as the dog lands from the jump, give your verbal table command. Wait for your dog to get on the table and into a down, then click and move in to deliver the treat. For run bys, run with your dog to the jump. As soon as he lands, give your verbal table command. The dog should continue on to the table, get on it, and lie down. Be sure to click as soon as your dog is in a down, no matter where you happen to be at that moment. Keep running past the table, and then return to him to deliver the treat as in Figure 12.
