Indicating the “Outside” Obstacle
Indicating the farther or “outside” obstacle requires handler motion toward
the dog’s path, facing the path to provide
pressure with the shoulders, forward
body language, and a bowling motion
of the handler’s arm to indicate that
the dog should move away as shown in
Figure 2. A verbal cue (Out, Move, or
something similar) is added to the body
position and motion cues. The combination of cues tells the dog to move
away from the handler and alters the
dog’s path toward the outside obstacle.
The cues are the same as those used to
teach lateral distance (see “Out Spot
Out!” in CR September 2013).

Release the dog from a stay. As
he catches up with you, say
"Here" and turn away so that he
follows you on the outside of your
body.

Release the dog. Use your cues
to indicate the inside obstacle,
and call him over the jump.
The foundation for teaching the dog to
take the inside obstacle begins on the
flat without equipment. Start with the
dog in a sit or stand next to you. With
a treat or toy in the hand closest to the
dog, say Here (or In) and turn away from
the dog, keeping your hand down at
your side. The dog should follow the reward when you turn and should not cut
behind you to get the reward. If the dog
does not follow you, slow down your
motion and turn until he understands
what you want. Click and reward the dog
for following you. Next leave the dog in
a stay and move ahead of him. Release
the dog. As he catches up with you, say
Here and turn away so that he follows
the reward in your hand. Figure 3
shows the path for this exercise. Work
this exercise from both sides, gradually
increasing your distance from the dog.
Note: If you have taught the dog blind
crosses, he may be confused about
which way he should go. Ensure you are
maintaining eye contact with the dog
and are not dropping your other shoulder to indicate a side change.

The next step is to incorporate equipment. Set up two jumps and a tunnel as
shown in Figure 4. Place the dog in
a stay in front of jump #1. Release the
dog and say Here and your verbal cue for
the jump while using the combination of
motion, position, and hand/arm cues discussed above to bring the dog over jump
#2. Increase the difficulty of the exercise
