If you're one of those people who, while at work all day, dreams about what you will do with your
dogs when you get home, only to find the time you had slips away from you between chores,
children, spouses, and the other little necessities of life, you're not alone! In this series, following
the Bob Bailey motto of "Think, Plan, Do," I'll outline plans for skills you can train in 10 minutes
or less, so that you can find the time you didn't think you had to train your dogs!
This month we're going to work
on our c hute (collapsed tunnel)
training. The chute is a special
obstacle; if you cue a turn before
the chute, the dog can turn as he
exits because the c hute fabric is
movable. If you give forward cues
before the chute, your dog will
come blasting through. In this
sense, the chute is like a straight
tunnel which the dog can perform
in different ways based on your
cues. However, unlike a str aight
tunnel, there can be a real danger
in cuing a turn as your dog enters
the chute-if your dog turns too
sharply as he exits, he can easily get tangled in the chute fabric.
Care must also be taken with the
angle of approach to the chute
since the barrel, however well padOctober 14 | Clean Run
ded, is rigid and will not give if the
dog hits it with a lot of force.

In most cases, I avoid throwing a
toy or f ood forward after a tur ning obstacle (jump, straight tunnel, etc.) if I am not going to continue forward past with my dog.
However, in the case of the chute,
I don't want my dog to turn until
he reaches the end of the fabric,
despite what my turning cues
might suggest. Therefore, I will
toss a toy or food forward when I
am cuing a turn. I will take care
to toss the toy in a manner that
supports the direction of the turn,
but with the chute, I want my dog
looking forward, even if I am behind, until his head is clear of
the end of the fabric.
I put my dog in a sit-stay and lead
out to one of the handler locations
shown in Figure 1. I make sure to
lead out f ar enough that m y dog
can extend through the chute. I then
present either my left or right side
cues, as is appropriate, and release
my dog without moving. I hold my
toy or f ood in m y inside ar m (the
arm closest to the dog). As my dog
comes through the chute, I take a
step forward with my inside leg and
move my inside arm forward, releasing the toy or food forward. As my
dog goes to the r
einforcement, I continue forward with him. I r epeat for
a variety of different scenarios, similar to those shown in the diagram.
