I lead out, giving my dog enough room
to extend as he exits the chute. I call
my dog through the chute to either my
left or right side. As my dog comes
through, I take a step forward with my
inside leg and move my inside arm
forward releasing the toy/treat.

I lead out to one side of the chute and
then I walk forward to the other side of
the chute so that my dog sees my
motion while he is still in his sit-stay. I
release my dog. I reward him in heel
position or I throw the reward forward
and follow after it.

Exercise 2: Handler Motion
on the Exit Side of the Chute
After my dog has seen me in a variety of locations on the e xit side
of the chute, I introduce my dog to
motion cues while I am on the exit
side of the chute.
Step 1: I lead out to one side of
the exit of the chute, leaving my
dog enough room to extend as he
exits the chute. I walk forward to
the other side of the chute as
shown in Figure 2 and release my
dog. When my dog gets to my side,
after having completed the c hute,
I reward him in heel position or
throw a toy or piece of food forward and follow after it. I repeat
this step, leading out to the opposite side of the chute.

I repeat the exercise gradually moving
my location closer to the end of the
chute, always taking in to consideration
the minimum amount of space my dog
needs to be able to exit the chute without getting tangled in the fabric.

Step 2: I repeat step 1, but this
time I release my dog before I am
all the way to the other side of the
chute. My dog will see some motion before he is released and I will
still be moving as he is moving toward the chute and going through
it. I repeat this step, leading out to
the opposite side of the chute.
Step 3: Once my dog has learned
to successfully judge which way to
turn at the exit of the chute based
on my location and motion cues on
the exit side of the chute, I make
the exercise a little more challenging by moving my location closer
to the end of the chute fabric as
shown in Figure 3. To some extent,
I let the dog dictate the minimum
distance I can be from the end of

the chute, because I don't want
my dog to get tangled in the f abric. However, I also expect my dog
to be aware of my changing location and work to a void crashing
into me as he exits.

Exercise 3:
Rear Crosses at the Chute
Many of us tend to avoid rear
crosses at the c hute because we
don't want to get our dogs tangled
up in the fabric by cuing a turn,
but being able to do a r ear cross
as your dog is entering the chute
can be a very handy skill! It does,
however, take some planning. Too
many forward cues and your dog
will not pick up the turn. Too many
turning cues and y our dog, if he
takes the chute, may get tangled
