Exercise 4:
Lateral Sends at the Chute

I often need to be able to move
away from the chute as my dog is
committing, so that I can get ahead
on course, and also so that I can
let my dog know just what direction to go as he exits the chute. I
will tend to avoid cuing more than
45°angle turns as my dog enters
the chute, particularly on USDAAor FCI-length c hutes; AKC chute
fabric is shorter, and I can typically give more turning cues without
fear that my dog will get tangled in
the fabric.

Gradually change your angle of motion so you're moving away from your dog. Throw
the reward object so that it lands one to two strides in front of the chute exit, and so that
its location supports your direction of motion.

Step 1: Do the chute straight, with
no side c hanges. Start well back
from the chute entrance and do not
lead out more than 10-15'. Release
your dog and start running forward
as shown in Figure 4. As you run,
throw the reward object using your
inside arm, like a bo wling ball,
so that it lands one to two stride
lengths beyond the end of the chute
fabric. Continue running f orward
toward your thrown object as your
dog exits the chute. Do a few repetitions with the dog on your right as
well as on your left.
Step 2: Gradually change your angle of motion, moving away from
your dog as you do so. Make sure

you both have enough room to extend on the approach to the chute.
Although at first you'll be tossing
the reward with your inside arm,
you may find at some point that
switching to y our outside arm is
more comfortable and logical for
your dog. Make sure you practice
your aim before training with your
dog! You want the thrown object
to always land one to two strides
ahead of your dog, if your dog follows your line of motion as he enters the chute. See Figure 6.
If at an y time y ou arrive at the
thrown object bef ore your dog,
make sure you grab it up before
he gets to it. Then try again. Make
sure that y our dog sees the correct line of motion from you before he enters the chute barrel.
Avoid calling your dog's name so
that you can see if your motion is
in the right direction and if he is
watching you. Make sure to gi ve
a verbal cue for your dog to take
the chute so that you don't inadvertently pull him off the obstacle.

Exercise 5:
Front Crosses at the Chute
When I do a front cross at the
chute, I try to initiate my turning
cues before my dog enters the
chute barrel so that he knows that
