The double lap turn is used in situations
where the handler needs to turn the dog
away from her while cueing a tight turn.
The turn is created "on the flat," meaning that the dog initiates the turn while
he is on the ground. As the dog finishes
the turn, his approach to the next jump is
at the necessary angle.
Last month we covered the lap turn,
which is also used to turn the dog away
from the handler on the flat. The main
difference between these turns is that in
the double lap turn, both the dog and
handler are turning; whereas, in the lap
turn, only the dog is turning. In other
words, in the double lap turn, the handler turns her shoulders into the dog to
cue the jump, while in the lap turn the

be used over the lap turn when the dog
needs to wrap the jump and come back

Cues for the Double Lap Turn

The cue combinations for this technique
are as follows:

Motion: The handler initially moves
backward away from the dog to draw
the dog toward her and then she
moves into the dog's path to turn him
away. She does not move forward to
cue the jump as this cues extension.

Eye contact: The handler should use
direct eye contact to draw the dog toward her, then as she turns the dog
away, she should have indirect eye
contact toward the jump.

Shoulders/Chest: The handler turns
into the dog, facing him to pull him
toward her. As the handler initiates
the turn away from her, she rotates
her shoulders into the dog at the
same time.

Footwork: The handler's feet should
be facing the dog and moving backward to draw the dog toward her. As
the handler initiates the turn away,
she should turn her feet so that they
are facing the dog's takeoff point.

Location/Position: Initially the handler should be ahead of the dog's path
to draw the dog toward her. As the

helps to draw the dog's attention.
Presenting the hand with fingers up

is very effective in getting the dog's

blend arms and use both arms to cue
the jump.
