Secret to share: "I'm very, very
introverted."
Favorite piece of technology:
Manners Minder/Treat & Train
In her competition bag: Treat/
jackpot tug for Cheer, ball on a
rope for Sprint, little balls for Spec,
mouse pad for target on contacts,
kibble (her treat of choice), and lots
of doctor paraphernalia, "because
people ask me to help all the time."
What she's most proud of:
"That almost every weekend I am
told a time or two that people
enjoy watching my relationship
with my dogs."
Best advice to give: Be positive
and believe in your dogs.
Best piece of advice received:
"From Linda Mecklenburg, I learned
that I can't be perfect all of the time.
I had an issue with that."

Jean Lavalley would have to agree with those classic lyrics, "You got
to accentuate the p ositive." The full-time v eterinarian believes that
focusing on the p ositive has help ed her gain suc cess in the agilit y
ring. She and her Shetland Sheepdogs have won the finals in national events, and br ought home t eam and individual medals fr om the
World Agility Open, IFCS World Agility Championship, and FCI Agility
World Championship.

First Class
It was while she was still a vet student,
in 1995, that Jean and her husband,
Joel, were invited to an agility class in
a friend's backyard. Though neither of
them had ever seen agility, they thought
it might be fun. They were not disappointed, and together continued to pursue the sport. "I knew that I loved it when
I went to my first trial," Jean explains.
"I did terribly. No Qs in two days and
it was the most fun ever." She had been
training obedience and showing in conformation at the time. On reflection she
believes that it was the partnership that

hooked her. "I have always had dogs, but
I feel like until I did agility I didn't love
them properly. There is so much to agility that it builds a different relationship."

On the Job
A veterinarian in a general small animal practice in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Jean credits her boss with allowing
her to make both training and competition possible with her career. She works
12-hour days on Monday and Tuesday
to build comp time for traveling. In a
normal week, she has Wednesday off
