My initial intention was for people to
be able to serpentine #7, but this didn't
work on the actual course, as handlers
couldn't get there and tended to send the
dog forward into the tunnel (some dogs
actually going all the way and getting
disqualified). The best way was to run
the dog on the right through #5-#6 and
then either front cross, or back flick over
#7 and push into the tunnel on the handler's right. A few dogs ran all the way
around the tunnel, and although this
meant they were then on the optimal side
for the A-frame, some dogs came out of
the tunnel wondering where to go next.
The choice after the tunnel was whether
to cross to the other side of the A-frame
(giving a nice line to #10) or to run on
the left of the A-frame and get ahead
of the dog and push him to #11. Most
people chose the first option and then
were able to serpentine #11 and push to
#12. This was tidy and well-performed
by many. A few sent their dogs forward
toward #12, but few dogs went all the
way over that jump. A tight turn at #13
was desirable, with a turn to the left (orange line) giving a better line to #14-#15
than a turn to the right. See Figure 2.
Both directions did work, but some dogs
turned the opposite way to what their
handlers intended and back jumped #13.
The run from #14 to #18 was straightforward, with handlers running their dogs
on the right. Once again a tight turn at
#18 was called for and those who left
their dog at the A-frame, got to the #18
obstacle early, and cued a tight turn back
to the tunnel, did best.
The sequence #20 to #23 caused concerns for many (requiring competent
dogwalk performances as their handlers
left the dogs to it!). All except a few got
their dogs into the correct end of the #23
tunnel. It was then a straight run home.
I was really happy with this course, and
many people enjoyed running it; howev-

er, I admit it was quite hard for some of
them. I was most surprised by how many
failed on the weave entry. D
Karen started doing agility in 1987 with a Collie cross called Cobber. Along with her husband Pete, she has competed all over NZ and Australia, winning numerous
national titles with her dogs. Karen runs a grooming and training center in Upper Hutt near Wellington called GOODOGZ. She currently runs two dogs: Dee (5-year-old
Heading Dog) and Finn (4-year-old BC/Heading Dog) who are both JA/Senior level. She belongs to the Upper Hutt club where she is a committee member and head
instructor for agility.
