The Judge's Debriefing

"Pedal to the metal..." "Let 'er rip...", "Run
it like ya stole it..." were just a small
sampling of the enthusiastic comments
overheard at the course map distribution table, as I dropped off the day's offering, shown in Figure 1. It was shaping
up to be a fast 'n furry-ous kind of day!
I knew this course was a winner: I had
tried it at home. Granted, my "crash-test
dummy" was a 12-month-old pointer
whose idea of teamwork didn't extend
much beyond opportunistically using
the cat's antics to cover yet another
end-run at the garbage can. However,
except for falling victim to the most
obvious pitfalls-both of the dummy
jumps-I had gotten a very green
puppy, through it "clean." Then again, I
did have the advantage of having designed the course; I knew the trouble
spots. Your actual mileage may vary.
Ah... but, not so fast... literally! I hoped
my eager, lead-footed exhibitors didn't
start waving that checkered flag prematurely. Hopefully, they had (carefully) noted those subtle challenges,
including the pressure points and the
momentum shifts, and hadn't missed
the places where the obvious wasn't so
apparent. Time would tell.
The opening sequence #1-#4 was, quite
literally, straightforward enough-or,
so I thought. A few handlers showed
excessive concern over the placement
of the dummy jump after #2. Those
who attempted to "block" this potential
off-course elected to lead out past #2
and call the dog forward to begin. As
