Start lines should not need consist of the dog asking if they should stay or go; they should consist of clear rules
and practiced routines. Dogs, like most of us, like to know what is expected because it makes the game more fun
and builds confidence, which creates happy start lines.

Sometimes, even if all the above steps
have been trained, reinforced, and generalized, handlers can still have issues at the
start line.
In cases where the dog does not want to
come off the start line, I always ask the
handlers to have their dog checked out
for any hidden injuries. If they have a
clear check-up, then I believe that practicing the start-line behaviors in as many

new places as possible, and slowly adding
different distractions and pressures so the
dog can remain successful, will help the
dog be more confident in the ring.
For dogs who anticipate the release, I like
the handlers to add distractions and pressure into their training as well-one distraction at a time until the dog starts to see
distractions as a cue to remain in place.
The dog should always feel safe and have
the choice to leave position. I do not correct self-releases; I just make the next

reps easier or decrease the pressures and
distractions. I also do not use any physical manipulation on the start line because
I want my dog to feel in control, and I
cannot assess my dog if I am physically
manipulating her into position.
