Training Your Dog to Manage
Angled Entries
I'm going to specifically look at angled
entries to the A-frame, but I do this
training with the seesaw and dogwalk
as well. The idea is simple. I teach my
dogs to wrap a pole and then do the
contact obstacle. The pole is gradually
faded to a golf tee to remind handlers
which approach to reward.
Step 1
Work out how much room your dog
needs to straighten up before the
equipment. Obviously, this depends on
the size of your dog. Looking at Shady,
Zip, and Dexi, you can see that they
are radically different in size and build.
Shady weighs a lot more than Zip does,
but is also far more powerful. Dexi
is tiny and weighs very little and so
needs some space to turn and then get
enough speed up to climb the A-frame.
Unlike the other two dogs, he would
find it hard to do so from a standing
start. So, when you look at the distance,
consider not just how quickly your dog

can turn, but also how quickly he can
accelerate. While you're thinking about
it, we move to Step 2.
Step 2
Teach your dog to wrap a pole. This
has become very fashionable with the
advent of European handling; however, please think very carefully before
doing this type of work with young or
immature dogs. Turning tightly places
a lot of strain on delicate ligaments
and tendons. I like to make sure my
dogs are fully grown before starting
this work.
I begin indoors as I like to shape the
movement. Hold your aim clearly
in your mind: namely the idea is for
your dog to move away from you and
go around the pole or cone, whatever
you're using. Important things to remember are:

·	Try to always click in a different

place and reward in a different place.

·	Try to always click while the dog is
moving.

Shady, Zip, and Dexi are
radically different in size
and build.

·	Click then move your hand to reward.

Otherwise, your hand movement will
predict reward rather than your click.
Once you've taught the dog to watch
your hands, building movement,
especially distance, is difficult.

·	Remember, we want to be able

to fade this pole, so change it up!
Change what you're asking the dog
to circle so that you don't build a
particular object as part of your
dog's picture of the behavior we're
asking for.
