LB: How did you choose two shelter dogs that became agility champions so quickly? LB: What were the challenges in your training? TH: Blind luck! When we adopted Lucky, we simply fell in love with her at the shelter. She was three years old, and her owner had died. She certainly wasn’t built for agility, with her long back and short legs. She was a terrier mix with crazy hair and the biggest ears imaginable. Her back legs were so cow-hocked I wasn’t sure which direction she was going. I started obedience with her because she would run out the door and not come back. When I discovered that she loved the jumping in competitive obedience, we decided to try agility. Lucky introduced me to a world of competitive dog sports and all the fun that goes with it. I would never have been so involved had she not shown such drive. She loves agility, and though her conformation (long back, odd legs) does not favor it, the look of joy on her face after a successful run is the true reason we run. When she recently completed her C-ATE it was the second time I considered semi-retiring her but she did donuts at the end of each run and was telling me at 10 years young she was not close to being done with agility. A few years after adopting Lucky, we found Chewie. I wanted a small nonshedding dog with the energy for agility. Chewie certainly had the energy, although his conformation didn’t appear any more suited for the sport than Lucky’s. He has front legs that point out at about 180° from each other. LB: What was easy about training your “unlikely champions?” TH: I work within each dog’s likes and abilities. Knowing Lucky’s physical limits, I have always made sure she got chiropractic adjustments whenever needed. I do my best to play to her strengths in agility. CPE with its distance and strategy games are perfect for Lucky and me. I looked for her signs of fatigue to understand how far to go that day, and I tried to fill her runs with the obstacles and flow she liked. The CPE games allow me to play up my dog’s strengths and preferences as long as I listen to her body language. Lucky & Chewie By Lisa Barrett Call Name: Happy Go Lucky C-ATE, ExCL, ExWC, ExSN, ExJP, ExFH, ExJU; Obedience: MB-UD; Rally: MB-RAE3; Versatility Title: MB-VX5 Martinez Animal Shelter, Martinez, California Call Name: Adopted From: Titles Earned: I worried about Lucky’s teeters. I thought her hesitancy centered on the noise and movement, and that the teeter movement might have been hurting her back. I even stopped running in Standard for about eight months because I was convinced the teeter was hurting her and requiring chiropractic adjustments. Then we moved into the Enthusiast class, and her jump height dropped from 8" to 4". Although I still don’t think repeated teeters are good for her or any older, long-backed dog, the drop in jump height brought a marked change in Lucky’s ring behavior. She regained her old speed and enthusiasm. When we added occasional Standard runs at the lower jump height, they really seemed to have no ill effect on her back health. For any handler wondering how to increase speed and enthusiasm in older dogs, I highly recommend lowering the jump height. Now that I believe the jumps were the cause of Lucky’s back pain, I am planning to move Chewie to a lower jump height to help prolong his agility life as soon as he is a veteran. With Chewie, distance was a huge challenge. He is a momma’s boy, and distance work that might require him to go out 15' seemed to outreach his comfort zone. I trained distance very slowly, moving a few inches out every couple of months. © doghouse arts TH: Lucky is so smart that once she got something, she had it. I do not believe in the hundreds of runs we have done that she has ever missed a weave pole entry no matter how difficult the approach. I do believe she has coached Chewie, because he learned so fast and seemed to know things I hadn’t taught him yet. Chewie had stamina to practice hard and long though I tried not to push it. He picked up everything very quickly and really enjoyed running. He could easily handle the five runs per day in CPE and still have energy at the end of the day.
