At a USDAA trial early in Suzy’s career, she did the A-frame back and forth six times over my objections. Suzy and I were struggling to be a team on that particular weekend. I was very frustrated and wondering what I was doing. The judge saw Suzy’s potential and told me how good we would eventually be together. D Training Notes Keep the Speed While You Get Control In the early stages of her training, Suzy self-rewarded a lot by doing obstacles on her own. This was extremely difficult to correct because she self-rewarded at high speed, smiling all the way. She was having way too much fun doing agility without me. I didn’t want to take away her fun or slow her down, but I did want her to understand agility is a team sport. To solve this problem, I encouraged her to run what she thought were the “correct” obstacles as fast as she wanted, and then we would work on the missed contacts and directional cues. I never tried to slow her down to get more control. I was lucky to have instructors who would not let me discourage Suzy’s speed in any way. As we both became more confident, I started incorporating time-outs if she self-rewarded. I would pull her out of the run order, and she would have to wait and watch and then try again. Slowly she learned that we were a team and she was not allowed to take charge of what her next obstacle would be. The rewards came a lot quicker then. We would do serpentines with trap obstacles within range. She didn’t get rewarded until she actually was able to resist the trap. As time went by, I gradually weaned her off treats and toys during training runs. In training and at trials she gets treats only at the end of the run and only in her crate, not at ringside. I reward just about anything at training or a trial except grabbing obstacles of her own choosing. She’s smart enough to understand when she chooses her own course, the run stops, and no rewards are available. The rest of her classes are usually clean (if I do my job correctly). When the error is mine, she is generously rewarded, despite the off-course. I have also taught her verbal Left and Right directional cues. Serpentines are a great way to teach left and right, whether it’s with jumps or other obstacles. My favorite courses are ones where I can use verbal directional cues with her.
