TEACHING FOCUS AND IMPULSE-CONTROL CLASSES

Pay close attention to how your students enter the room and prepare for this week’s class. Instead of pointing out things they are doing wrong, focus on what they are doing right. Give positive verbal feedback for following your instructions during setup and while bringing in the dogs. When you make a comment to one student (for example, “nice job on looseleash walking in the door”), others will notice and follow suit. We want to follow the same principles in teaching our students that we use in training our dogs. Specifically, reinforce small steps in the desired direction and ignore errors. This leads to more enthusiasm and motivation for both dogs and humans.
THIS WEEK’S EXERCISES
Offered Focus While Moving and with Distractions This week we again raise the challenge level of this exercise. We are always working on improving skills, not just training skills at the same level over and over. To increase skill levels this week we are going to combine moving focus with stronger distractions (another dog and handler working close by). To maximize the possibility of success and to maintain control of the environment, we set up barriers between the working teams. The barriers we use are simply ex-pens opened up and stretched out to divide the working space in half. Having the barriers in place insures that dogs cannot actually interact during the exercise even if they choose not to offer handler focus. Having barriers that can be seen through is important. Solid bar-
riers don’t allow for the visual observation of the other dog and handler, and we actually want that as the distraction. This exercise is a foundation step toward the goal of a dog being able to concentrate on his own work while another dog is running agility. As an instructor you should observe the dogs carefully and lower criteria if necessary. You may have to have the dogs move farther away from each other or remind the trainers to reinforce more frequently with the new level of distraction. Have each pair of teams practice moving focus for only a minute or two at a time. Recalls with Other Dogs as Distractions For this week’s recall exercise we will use the same set-up that we have for offered focus (a divider down the middle of the working space). Have two working teams set up for a recall at opposite
