For the handlers who kept the dog on their left on the dogwalk, making even a
slight movement to the right pulled the dog to the off-course #6 jump.

Handlers either front crossed after the triple, as
shown in Figure 4, or kept their dogs on the their
left side through the triple and dogwalk. The choice
depended on how they assessed their ability to keep
the dogs away from the A-frame and jump options
after the triple, and which of the two jumps at the end
of the dogwalk was the greatest off-course threat to
their particular dog. The #6 jump was particularly alluring and many dogs took this jump as an off-course
if the handler was behind them for a running contact
(with the handler on either side of the dogwalk); although I saw more dogs take #6 if the handler had not
done the front cross after the triple to put the dogs
on their right side. Figure 5 depicts how some dogs
with a stopped contact either cut in front of or behind
their handlers to get at the #6 off-course if the handler
made even the slightest indication in the direction of
the jump #6. Handlers with independent stopped
contacts or handlers who could get in front of their
dogs at the end of the dogwalk had no issues going
straight to the table at #11.
The next potential problem came between jump
#13 and the teeter at #14. I believe that many of the
handlers underestimated the #4 jump as an option.
Handlers who did a front cross before #13, as shown
in Figure 6, did not have difficulties here. If the
handler chose, as in Figure 7, to take their dog on
their right side through the sequence and they did
not gain their dog's attention with an RFP, threadle,
or hard pull-or stepped into their dog's path even
slightly-they saw their dogs go sailing over #4 before they knew it.
The sequence from the teeter at #14 to the #15 tunnel
could easily be done with the dog on either side of the
handler. Some handlers anticipated a possible issue
with pushing their dogs out of the tunnel over #16
with them so far away, but this turned out not to be an
issue for most dogs. Their momentum carried them
straight for jump #16 before returning to the A-frame
at #17. Then handlers either did a blind cross, front
cross, or rear cross after the A-frame and before the
double jump #18. All were equally successful.

We owe it to our dogs to give them the best care we can possibly give.
