Keeping the performance puppy active and fit, without overdoing and putting undue strain on a growing body, can be a fine line to toe. It is easy to get carried away
and do a bit too much, especially when not doing so means making the pup stop
something she was having fun doing. Exercise serves so many purposes: it builds
strength, flexibility; and endurance; it teaches the puppy how to use her body; it
tires her out so that she will give us some peace and quiet; it's fun; and it teaches new
skills. We just need to remember that all things need to be in moderation and that
puppies will often keep going until we tell them to stop-even if they've overdone.
Most of us are quite cognizant of not stressing young bodies too early when planning agility training-holding off on weaving, seesaw, and full height A-frame
work, for example, until growth plates are closed-but we are not always as careful
when it comes to non-agility activities-things we think of as "just for fun"-maybe
because we aren't serious about these other activities, we are not as aware of potential serious consequences.

how to use their bodies, how to turn, accelerate, decelerate, and the like. When
you have a group of puppies together, it's
also a great time to play one on one with
your pup while the other pups gambol
about. She will quickly learn that paying
attention to you is every bit as much fun
as playing with them.
Swimming, running around, and playing fetch are all wonderful forms of exercise, and
are also all things that we have seen cause problems when puppies do too much too
early. It is important that your performance puppy always trust that you know best,
and that you are best suited to make decisions. Later on in life this translates into a dog
that when things are worrying, frightening, angering, or perplexing, will turn to you for
guidance rather than bolting, biting, or becoming distracted-a dog that understands
that focusing on you is something valuable to her in scary situations, not something she
offers you now and again when there's nothing more interesting to occupy her mind.
Running around and playing with similar age and size puppies a few times a week is a
great way to burn off energy without being pushed too far, as long as the puppies are
being monitored and no puppy gets picked on or becomes a bully. We love having littermates come over once a week for a play session; they know each other well, and the
dynamics are generally good. When puppies are playing with similar age and size puppies, they will not push as hard since they will all fatigue at a similar time, and the lack of
