them to make contacts, but we weren't
making it crystal clear to the dogs what
we expected of them. Our first agility
dogs were accidental." The growth in the
technical side of the sport, she believes,
makes us better teammates and handlers
for our dogs.
She is currently working with two
Cavaliers, dogs that had belonged to
her friend, Susan Lawless. "Susan died
shortly after my Boxer, and the Cavs
helped me through my loss. A year later my Cav, Rocketman, died suddenly.
I was so devastated, and these little
guys got me through. I think they were
brought to help me." Rocketman was
a star, soaring from Novice to MACH
in 19 months. Solo, another Cav, was
a champion in seven different agility
organizations.
Day to Day
Cool Critters Dog Training School offers everything from puppy classes,
basic obedience, and rally to beginner
and advanced agility classes. Ileana also

In addition to that, Ileana runs the business, and puts on Teacup and NADAC
trials. "Next year I will be doing seven
trials. That's me, with no staff, just a
group of really nice students."
An artist with a Masters degree in teaching, Ileana began her career teaching art.
"The school system was not for me. It
was really hard to teach those kids what
I wanted to teach them. It's a lot more
fun to teach people and their dogs."
teaches a distance class that evolved
from a painful hip and ultimate hip surgery. "I really learned a lot from being
crippled. I learned that there are times
when you can't run. Distance work was
how I learned to negotiate a course. I
became compassionate for those people
who couldn't run, helping them to compensate and teaching them guide their
dogs around a course. It was an eyeopening experience."
Group classes and some private lessons
take up about 12 hours of the workweek.
Patience, she says, is one of her strong
suits. "In art, you have to motivate the
students. They can't create if you crush
them. I take that into training with my
students, making sure that I say 'let's
try it this way,' rather than 'no.' The
ego is fragile and I don't want to make
them feel badly about themselves. I
want my students to be positive, to feel
confident." Having had a great many
wonderful dogs in her life, she knows
to enjoy a dog now, because she doesn't
know how long he will be with her. It's a
message she tries to pass on to her students. "Every moment I want my dogs
