and #6; 2) handle from the landing side of jumps #5 and #6;
or 3) take a non-obvious path. In options 1 and 2, there was
an assortment of types and locations of side switches used to
support the plan.
Regardless of the option attempted, a key to success was recognizing that the dog's path from jump #3 to #5 was designed
to be roughly straight (the red path in Figure 2); it was my expectation that the A-frame would be tempting, primarily for
those who pushed or pulled their dogs off this straight path.
I expected the most successful handlers would notice this line
and support their dogs to run it as such.
However, anticipating some side changes at every obstacle
in this path, I expected changes at #3 to have a long-ranging
impact on how things went at the threadle; that is, some handling at jump #3 adversely altered the straight path. For example, when handlers tried to do a front cross on the landing
side of #3, they had to be timely, well ahead of their dog, and
located toward jump #4, not in the space between #3 and the
A-frame. If the handler was early or out of position, the dog
would head for the A-frame. Handlers who did this while close
to their dog generally found the dog running past them to the
A-frame. A few dogs took the A-frame, but if a dog headed at
all toward the A-frame, even without taking it, when the dog
turned back to #4, he had to take that jump at an angle that
put him on a more angled path over #5, which made turning
to the left or right problematic after that jump. In particular,
after the dog turned left upon taking jump #5, he was heading directly for the wrong side of jump #6 (the orange path in
Figure 2). Handlers then had to struggle to call the dog off of
#6 and through the gap, sometimes sending the dog back over
#5 in the process.
To further complicate this sequence, the angle and location
of jump #3 were set to encourage lateral distance handling. A
dog that could be sent laterally to this jump while the handler
ran toward the front of the ring would give the team a distinct
advantage. If the dog would not work away from the handler,
