Focusing ahead on specific obstacles after a jump, primarily
tunnels, may worsen ETOs. Similarly, specific obstacles before a
jump, once again primarily tunnels, may also exacerbate ETOs,
particularly when your dog cannot see the exit as he enters.
Moving from the dark tunnel back into the light, loss of connection with the handler, or handler location ahead of the dog
upon exit may be factors that contribute to this.
handling Factors
Handler motion can influence a dog's jumping performance.
For dogs with a tendency for ETOs, forward motion, handler
speed, and abrupt transitions in speed tend to cause problems.
The handler's location is also a factor. Generally, the farther
ahead of the dog the handler is located, the worse the ETOs
will become. Long lead-outs as well as front and blind crosses
may be more difficult for such dogs. Performance generally improves when the handler is closer to the dog, either alongside
or behind him, as long as the handler is not in the dog's landing
space or perceived landing space.
Dogs whose ETOs have led to jumping errors may lose confidence, which can lead to both refusals and off-courses. Refusals and runouts can occur with all dogs when there is handling
miscommunication, but with a dog that has ETOs these errors
may indicate the dog lacks confidence in his ability to assess or
perform the challenge he is presented with. Off-courses may
occur if the dog becomes intently focused very early on what

he perceives to be the correct line of jumps, seemingly without paying attention to the handler's cues. With a dog that has
ETOs, the handler should not attribute these problems to disobedience; most likely the dog is trying to be right. Corrections
for refusals, runouts, or "locking onto a line" should be avoided
as they can serve to further undermine the dog's confidence.
Jump Training
Poor jump training can certainly result in jumping problems,
but it is not the cause of ETOs. In most cases, the foundation
jump training in affected dogs was more than adequate and
many dogs start their careers as skillful jumpers. However, even
the most talented dog cannot jump well if he has trouble seeing the jumps.
Because ETOs are a vision problem-not a training problem-
they do not resolve with jumping drills, and many dogs actually
get worse if unsuccessful on the drills, due to a loss of confidence.
dIAgNOSIS OF ETOS
As with all jumping problems, determining the cause of ETOs
begins with a complete history. The most common sign, present in all cases, is the occurrence of inappropriately early takeoff points on approach to jumps, with premature descent (long
takeoff distance, short landing distance, apex of arc before the
bar). This may not be the only sign; so it is important to evaluate the dog thoroughly.
