slippery footing. Rubber matting may stretch over time, impacting its ability to
absorb the shock of impact. Weather effects, including temperature, humidity,
and rainfall, are also crucial for outdoor arenas, while artificial turf in indoor
facilities requires drainage for maintenance and sanitation. Dry weather conditions, leading to firmer ground, have been associated with a higher incidence
of injury in greyhounds racing on grass tracks.
The rate of compaction of a surface may also influence performance and
injury in athletes. Compacted dirt track can result in debris that impacts the
athlete, and in horseracing, the rider. The risk of injury in racing greyhounds
has been shown to increase in successive races, likely secondary to substrate
compaction. In equine dressage, synthetic surfaces were shown to become
significantly harder throughout the competition. Similar impacts of ground
compaction on the quality of morning versus afternoon runs have been anecdotally reported by canine agility trainers and handlers, although no studies in
the literature have evaluated this effect. Appropriate maintenance of the substrate is critical to maintaining an even surface that performs consistently.
Factors that influence athletic performance and injury include the frequency
and intensity of training, the training regimen, the experience of the athlete
and handler, and the athlete's health, nutrition, and temperament. Track configuration is important in both canine and equine racing. Equine athletes are
additionally impacted by stall bedding, shoeing techniques, and rider experience, which are not directly applicable to canine athletes. It may also be noted
that equine athletes, and racing greyhounds to an extent, are at a much higher
risk of mortality in comparison to canine agility dogs; therefore, research may
be focused on strategies to minimize fatal injury, potentially at the expense of
focused examination of more subtle performance-altering injuries.
