21 21. Repeat this several times until the dog is racing back and forth. • These exercises are suitable for dogs eight months and older. 22 22. Have your training partner restrain your dog at one end of the plank while you wait at the other end. Release the dog so he races across the plank; give the dog his reward when he reaches you. Tug or interactive toys may be used but are not necessary. 23 23. Trade places with your helper. Now you restrain the dog and have your training partner reward him at the end of the plank. 24. Increase the difficulty of the ex24 ercise by setting up the dog at various angles and/or distances so he has to find the correct entrance to the plank. 25. Repeat on both sides, continu25 ing to also trade places with your training partner. 26 26. Increase the difficulty even more: start running with your dog and toss the motivator ahead of the dog. For the next step, use the hoops you’ve added to each end of the plank. You will also need a training partner for this step. • Use the short narrow plank, set flat on the ground, with a hoop on each end. Add Some More Height • For the next exercises, you can use a teeter or the short plank set on two 16" or 20" tables for stability. These exercises are suitable for dogs eight months and older, depending on how sure-footed the dog is. 27 27. Allow the dog to investigate the new height of the plank. Reward close to the plank. 28 28. Let the dog jump on wherever he wants, whether it’s on the table or on the plank. 29. Reward the dog for offering to 29 walk on the plank. Do not lure or coax the dog. 30. Allow the dog to jump off the 30 plank. Do not try to stop him. Give him verbal praise for jumping off but no yummy rewards except when he’s on the plank. Depending on how confident your dog is at this stage dictates how fast you can progress. Do not try to rush any of these stages. Take as long as the dog needs to be successful.
