Learning the Game
When Maureen fell for agility, she was an avid gardener and a runner. She was also working a full-time non-dog-related job. In her free time she soaked up as much education as she could get. “I attended classes once a week and trained at home.” She participated in seminars with Monica Percival, Nancy Gyes, and Elicia Calhoun. “There were no systems

Because I don’t have to follow so many rules, I can use what’s right for the situation and for my dog. I can tailor it more.” Meg, another Keeshond, was incredibly consistent, and Maureen tried to up her game with the dog. She competed at AKC Invitationals and placed second. She was frustrated, however, that Meg was never making it into the top ten nationally. At AKC World Team tryouts in 2008, Meg was clean but had time faults. “We were always in the top 20, but just couldn’t break into the top 10 because of speed.” If she was going to be a top player, she realized that she would have to consider a faster breed.

A hallmark of Maureen’s competition record is consistency. She believes it is because the handling is consistent, so that her dogs know exactly what she wants. If an obstacle is poorly performed on course, she will mark it with an “uh-oh.” If the dog has an off-course, she blames herself.

Upping the Ante
Maureen couldn’t help but notice that herding dogs were leading the pack. It seemed the way to go, but which breed? Size was a consideration, as she wanted to stay with a small or medium dog. Some didn’t have the personality
