as loft himself over a square parallel spread from a walk. He can finesse
his way through tightly spaced grids
in collection or power through widely spaced grids in extension. He has
amazing body and leg awareness that
enables him to successfully negotiate
tricky jumping challenges and get himself out of trouble.

Scope is an innate ability. As with
horses, scope is not all that is needed
for a good jumper. The dog must want
to jump clean and he must have the
physical structure and conditioning to
do it. But, dogs can be taught mechanically how to jump and to make correct
judgments which makes up for what
they lack naturally. Many dogs become
exceptional jumpers through training,
not raw talent.

With any athlete-rider, handler, horse,
dog-one may have natural talent
while another must work and train very
hard to achieve the same level of performance. But, both can become accomplished at what they do. The goal
of any jump training program is for every dog to become the best jumper he
can be. D

Melanie Smith Taylor is internationally recognized as both a competitor and trainer for her achievements in show jumping.
In 1978, she earned the American Grandprix Association's Lady Rider of the Year title, as well as the overall Rider of the Year. That year
Melanie's mount was named AGA Horse of the Year. Melanie is one of only two riders ever to win the "Triple Crown of Show Jumping,"
the American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby, and the American Gold Cup. Representing the USA, Melanie won a team
gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games and at the "Alternate Olympics" in 1980, Melanie won the individual bronze medal.
She was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Sportswoman of the Year after winning the World Cup Final in 1982. She capped her
show jumping career with a team gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Melanie retired from active competition in 1987
and has continued to serve the horse world as a television broadcaster, course designer, judge, and trainer of young riders.

Beezie Madden is one of show jumping's living legends. She was the ﬁrst woman to surpass $1,000,000 in show jumping earnings.
In 2003 and 2011 she was a team gold medalist at the Pan American Games and in 2011 she was also an individual silver medalist.
Beezie won both team and individual silver medals at the World Equestrian Games in 2006. In 2004 and 2008 she was a team gold
medalist at the Olympic Games and in 2008 she was also an individual bronze medalist. She represented the USA a third time at the
2012 Olympic Games. Beezie is the 2013 FEI Rolex World Cup Finals Champion and USEF Equestrian of the Year.
Mary Mairs Chapot was the ﬁrst woman to win a Pan American Games gold medal and one of the ﬁrst women to represent
the USA at the Olympics. Early in her career she won both the Maclay and the AHSA Medal Championships. Representing the USA,
she won individual and team gold medals at the 1965 Pan American Games and a team silver medal at the 1967 Pan American
Games. Mary rode on 22 Nation's Cup squads and highlights of her many Grand Prix wins include the Imperial Cup, John Player Cup,
Queen Elizabeth Cup, and twice at The National Horse Show. Today Mary enjoys considerable success as an owner
and coach to daughters (and well known riders) Laura and Wendy.
Alan Korotkin has been an equestrian professional for nearly 20 years and enjoys his home base in Wellington, Florida.
He has coached over 150 S.F.H.J.A champions, over 100 Medal/Maclay/USET Finalists and placed in over 100 Grand Prix events.
He is married to his wife Kirsty and has two sons, Jared and Tanner.
