Adding Lateral Motion from the
Handler Across the Bar
Last month, I introduced how to train
and handle the backside of the jump.
The next stage is to add lateral motion
from you across the bar. This stage can
be hard for some dogs because as you
start to move, the dog will follow the
motion and jump from the wrong side.
However, it is important that you can
move early enough so you are out of the
dog's way on the landing side for maneuvers such as the German, blind cross, or
serpentine. Your ultimate goal should be
to get all the way across the bar before
the dog takes off for the jump. If the dog
is struggling, put the bar on the ground
and move the wings farther apart. You
can also add a barrier on the approach
side of the inside wing to help the dog
continue to the backside.
Start tucked inside the wing, allowing
your dog to see the wing. Have your dog
in a stay in a direct line to the backside.
As you release your dog, cue the back
side with your motion, shoulders, eyes,
feet, hands, and a verbal if desired. Once
you see your dog's eyes looking at his line
toward the backside (commitment), start
to move across the bar. As you start to
move, do not turn your eyes and shoulders in the direction you are moving.
This causes a disconnection with your
dog and you are likely to pull him toward
the inside of the jump. Keep your shoulders open toward your dog and look at
your dog's line to the backside/wing.
Continue progressing with earlier motion until you can get all the way across
the bar before your dog jumps, and your
dog stays committed to the backside
even when you are moving away. See
