If you are a blabbermouth, get the most out of it by having specific, consistent voice
inﬂections for your directional and your obstacle commands.

The Obstacles
Here are a few things to consider about using verbal
commands with some of the individual obstacles.

Weave poles: Many dogs prefer silence as they
weave and some dogs need the help of verbals (for
lots of reasons, not all good). If you are going to chatter while the dog is weaving, remember to use one
constant word or sound and keep the rhythm for the
dog. You can, if you're good, actually increase speed
by carefully increasing the cadence of your voice as
you train, but it isn't easy to do.
Jumps: If you are running hard at a jump you probably don't need to use a verbal Jump command. If
you do still want to, however, say it as soon as possible. If the dog is already jumping when you use your
verbal Jump command you are wasting your breath
and likely distracting your dog.

Contacts: Especially for dogs that are not trained as
well as they could be, try giving your end behavior
command when the dog is at the same point on the
obstacle each and every time and in the same voice
inflection. Well-trained dogs can appreciate this, too!

Flexibility
I think flexibility in meeting the dog's needs is required
in training. We must adapt to the dog as he matures and
masters concepts, as well as adapt to his ability and
physical and mental state. These adaptations may need
to happen on a daily basis in training. Use verbals when
and if needed. Use as many as you need, but no more. If
you need a bunch, you may be in the blabbermouth club.
It's not the end of the world! Some of us in the club are
doing pretty well! Just don't forget to listen and heed the
feedback from both your dog and your instructor! D
