and for a right turn is shown in orange. Turning right is the shorter path and
also sets the dog up better for jumps #5 and #6, but it must be done in tight
collection. Turning left the dog can be more extended, which for some teams
could result in a faster time even with the adjustments needed to go to #5.
The idealized dog path for #5-#8 is depicted in red in Figure 3. The line from
jump #5 to #6 is set nicely if the dog turned right at #4 since he will already
be headed in a nice, gentle bend toward jump #6. If he turned left at #4, he
will likely take #5 as shown in orange, unless you set a straighter angle of
approach to #5. Setting the line the dog will take over jump #7 is important
because if the dog takes jump as shown in by the dashed orange path, he
will probably think jump #4 is next. Ideally the dog will already be turning
toward #8 on landing.

Novice/Open Sequence

It is important to set the dog's line heading
into the box at #4 so that he will as straight
as possible to #5. If the dog takes the jump
on the diagonal line (orange), he will think
the next obstacle is #1.

A Novice/Open sequence and an idealized dog path are depicted in red in
Figure 4. There are two very common patterns included in this short sequence.
First there is a pinwheel from #2 to #4, and then the dog passes through a box
from #4 to #5. To get the most efficient line from #2 to #3, be sure to cue the
dog that he is turning left before he takes off for #2. Otherwise, as depicted in
orange, he may land long, and even may add a stride before turning toward #3;
you can see how this adds unnecessary distance to his path.
It is very important to set the dog's line heading into the box at #4 so that he
will go as straight as possible to jump #5. If the dog takes the jump on the
diagonal line as shown in orange, he will think the next obstacle is #1. See
