Are You At Nutrition Risk?
HEALTHCARE

COUNCIL ON AGING - ORANGE COUNTY

n Lisa Gibson, MS, RD, FAND
My mother used to say, "You can never be too rich or
too thin." The truth is, you can be too thin and it may
be a sign of being at nutrition risk. When talking about
seniors, especially people over 80, a problem can result
from being thin and frail. Being at nutrition risk means
seniors are not able to fight infections, heal wounds or
stay active because of the risk of falling.
When a senior lacks the financial resources to purchase food, they are at moderate nutritional risk. Many
seniors skip meals due to lack of funds
and have to decide between purchasing medication or food.
Changes in health can also put a
senior at nutritional risk. A new diagnosis may involve changes in diet making
a senior unsure of what foods to eat.
Medications can cause changes
in appetite, taste and digestion.
Dental problems and loose fitting
dentures make chewing foods a
challenge.
Finally, many homebound seniors are physically unable to shop
or cook for themselves. They may
also be socially isolated and depressed.
This causes a loss of appetite and decrease
in food intake.
Nutrition plays a critical role in all phases of the life
cycle. Being well nourished as you age will prevent
chronic diseases, help heal wounds and prevent falls.
The first step is to recognize the issue of nutrition risk
and the effect nutrition has on health.
A Nutrition Screening Initiative was established in
1989 consisting of over 25 national health and aging
organizations including the American Dietetic Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
This group developed the "Determine Your Nutritional
Health Checklist" to increase public awareness of malnutrition in seniors and to identify those that need help.
Review the checklist and see what changes you can
make for yourself or a loved one.

Answers Guide 2016

Every question on the checklist assesses the challenges that seniors may encounter in eating nutritious meals.
There are different points assigned to each question on
the list due to the effect it has on nutrition risk. A total
of 6 points indicates high nutrition risk.
There are many programs and services available to
assist seniors. In Orange County, the Meals on Wheels
program provides meals for homebound seniors. Many
senior centers offer a congregate lunch program which
provides the opportunity for seniors to socialize. Eating
alone is a risk factor, so eating with others will make a
difference in their nutrition risk. These nutrition programs are not just for seniors in economic need but for
all seniors. Both programs are offered for a suggested donation and no one is denied service due
to inability to pay.
The Council on Aging's-Orange County Benefits Enrollment Center (BEC)
program can help low income seniors
to apply for Cal-Fresh (food stamps)
benefits. If a senior does not have
Medicare insurance they may still
be eligible for the Commodity Food
Program at their local senior center
and may also receive information on
how to apply for Cal-Fresh benefits.
The Cal-Fresh program is underutilized
by seniors. It can be a great source to help
them purchase the foods they need.
Seniors diagnosed with diabetes or chronic renal
disease may have access to nutrition counseling under
Medicare Part B benefits. Contact your physician and
health plan for details.
Accurate nutrition information helps prevent nutrition risk. To learn about additional resources visit: Eatright.org, or Nutrition.gov. You can contact the Council
on Aging and ask for the BEC program at 714-560-0424.
You will find a list of senior centers on page 117 in the
Answers Guide.
