Fraud Alert!

Some fraudulent providers and suppliers offer Medicare beneficiaries "free" services or equipment in exchange for your Medicare number. "Free" should be the
red flag for you.
Beware of people who say they know how to get
Medicare to pay for something you don't need. Medicare pays for services and items based on medical necessity-meaning a service or time you really need for your
medical condition. In addition, most durable medical
equipment requires a prescription from your doctor.
Beware of phone scams where callers claim to be
from Medicare, Social Security, the IRS or other government entities asking for your Medicare number or other
personal information. These entities will not call you.
They already have your Medicare number and will not
ask you for it or for other personal information.
Similarly, fraudulent insurance agents tell beneficiaries they "must" change plans to keep their doctor,

and/or they must change plans each year. This may be
false information and a red flag. The agents have an interest in making a commission, rather than serving your
best interest. Important:
n Do not move out of your Medicare plan unless you
want to.
n Do not sign any forms if you don't want to.
n Do not give out your Social Security or Medicare
number to strangers.
n Beware of unsolicited phone calls or knocks at your
door. If you don't know the person, don't open
your door. Some agents claim to be from Medicare.
Medicare will not call you or come to your home.
n Some agents will call pretending to represent your
doctor or clinic. They will tell you that you MUST
change plans to keep your doctor. Check with your
doctor's office before signing anything.
n If you are deceived into switching your Medicare
plan, report it immediately! It can be fixed.

aggressive behavior from an agent, report it to the California Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-855-613-7080. If you
