Key Design Highlights The building provides care for children from birth to age five, as well as mothers, in a small town in Colombia. Structures are constructed primarily with concrete and bamboo, and local techniques of split bamboo formwork add texture to exterior concrete walls. The construction process employed local laborers, who developed skills while on the job. A series of interior portholes, tunnels, and bridges are proportioned for children to navigate through the building and make discoveries. The building also serves as a civic center and gathering place for the community. contract Furniture in classrooms (left) can be easily rearranged for different teaching settings. Stairs, ramps, and portholes are designed to encourage children to explore and discover. With the concrete walls and bamboo structure visible, the designers Daniel Feldman and Ivan Dario QuiƱones (below) stand in the building under construction.
