Designer
You
Should
Know
Graciela
Andraos

Being raised in the design industry, Graciela
Andraos, RID, ASID, who is design director and
vice president at HKS in Dallas, was convinced that
she was going to create her own career path and
step away from design before starting college. After
two years of unfulfilling business classes, however,
she realized that the design industry was both
where she was needed and wanted to be. Shortly
after graduating from Parsons School of Design
in New York City, she quickly entered the real world
and began her own path in the corporate design
field, working as a senior interior designer at
Gensler in Dallas for five years, before joining HKS,
where she has worked ever since.

Graciela Andraos joined HKS
two years ago in Dallas, where
she is design director and vice
president. Her projects and
clients include Expedia,
BottleRocket, and The Campus
at Legacy West in Plano. She
also led and designed HKS's
Miami office (below), which
reflects the collaborative spirit
and connection to the firm's
global brand while respecting
the local culture; as well as its
new 6,500 square foot office
in Fort Worth, Texas (above),
which improves the company's
ability to collaborate and host
clients, and increases their
connection to the community.

How does your background inform your design
and approach today?
Watching my mom transform from a skilled
seamstress to a successful businesswoman instilled
in me a drive to succeed and achieve my goals in my
career and personal life. She has also consistently
encouraged me to be curious and explore the world
through multiple lenses when looking for design
inspiration.
What is unique about your overall design
approach?
My design process is really about inclusivity
and diversity. I see tremendous value in bringing
multiple voices to the table when approaching a
project, regardless of experience level or expertise.
At the onset of most projects, as a cohesive studio,
we often charette projects to get multiple points
of view and generate new perspectives and
solutions. The old method of the design leader
redlining and passing off to a junior designer

is no more in our studio; it's about fostering the future
leaders to share our collective passion together.
What interior spaces have you worked on
recently? Was there something innovative that
you feel you brought to the project?
For a competition for a stand-alone community
support facility down in Houston, we focused on
an interior approach that connected its employees,
both internally and externally, to the community
and surrounding neighborhoods. The vision is much
like an augmented coworking facility, allowing
choice in where and when you work, while providing
amenities to create this connective tissue. Alongside
this approach, we designed the space to maximize
flexibility, with raised access floors, demountable
walls and moveable/reconfigurable partitions to
futureproof the interior for growth or intended usage.
What are some interesting trends that you
see in interior design today?
Neuroscience, or the science of the brain, is something
that influences our current work and will continue
to do so in the future. We are making a big push
in affecting physical and psychological wellbeing
through the built environment and utilizing research
and evidence-based design to strengthen our
solutions can have even more impact in our projects.
What do you see as the biggest challenges
facing interior designers today?
Rapidly changing technology is not only impacting
the way we provide design solutions in the workplace,
it is also changing the way we work, now and in the
future. In the next decade, many of our tasks may
become automated, so how do we, as designers,
maintain the humanistic component of design?
There are definite positives to this outlook, so how
do we integrate that potential automation and
artificial intelligence into our process?
