"For our higher education clients, we are not seeing an immediate rethinking
of interior spaces, because they are typically designed with a lot of flexibility
already. Classrooms have divisible partitions so two small rooms can become one;
science laboratories have inter-connecting doorways for easy paths of travel from
one room to another. This ability to flex up or down will allow universities to space
students out accordingly. They may have to run more segments of an individual
course, but that is a scheduling issue and not a space issue. In academia, the
private faculty office is still the go-to office configuration that provides built-in
social distancing-teachers in higher education never embraced the open-office
concept to begin with. Even with more open-office configurations for graduate
students or administrative staff, the norm is for 54-inch-high partitions for visual
and acoustic privacy that now can provide separation to protect from COVID-19
as well. Where we see a greater need in the future is for equipment and spaces
that are dedicated to distance learning. It may be difficult to get students to come
back to campus, even if a vaccine for coronavirus is developed. Flexibility in when
and how to attend classes will be in demand in the long term, and universities will
have to adapt campus spaces to keep remote populations of students and
academics engaged."
