The recent Ricardo Mobility Summit was conceived with one overarching
goal: Facilitate conversations regarding how the transport sector
can move from cleaner mobility as a vision ... to cleaner mobility at scale.
We created a format for thought leaders across transport, finance,
government and academia to share insights and philosophies on the
journey from innovation to mass market adoption.
The Summit was architects of the next generation of transport discussing
issues and challenges that affect us all, including megatrends
in energy, environment, finance, electrification, autonomy,
software and infrastructure and how they are converging to define
the future of moving people and goods.
The transport sector is in transition. The agility of tech companies,
start-ups and universities unbound by risk is being met by an industry
forged in principals of risk mitigation and quarterly financial reports.
It's a phenomenon that creates a dichotomy of value - rewarding
scale, predictability and risk management, while elevating relative
spontaneity, experimentation and risk taking.
According to our Summit speakers, mobility execs are realizing
they have challenges in common with other industries. Accordingly,
cross-sector collaboration between government, private and public
industry is becoming essential to making mobility more accessible
and affordable to all.
Since an inherent imbalance of risk exists in this new ecosystem,
there must be an " inside " organization that understands the nuances
of all stakeholders and helps find a balance. Bridging this chasm is
where Ricardo seeks to drive value. We foster cross vertical collaboration
while deploying the right mix of technologies to achieve both
environmental and business goals. The key is accelerating development
of advanced technologies while optimizing production and
maintenance of existing products.
Ricardo leverages a century of technical and market insights to
tackle the toughest problems in transportation, bringing forth novel
solutions that accelerate our clients' developments of proven technology,
while de-risking the incubation of new ideas. We look at
the transport sector holistically, finding points of leverage and commonality
from one sector to provide opportunity for the next. This
approach enlists a unique blend of entrepreneurial attitudes and
time-tested production processes that mirror the convergence happening
in the industry.
Another hot-button topic at the Summit was how the volume and
complexity of in-vehicle software is disrupting the attributed value
to solutions that move people and goods. The question of what is
(or will become) commodity is in constant debate and defining a discrete
answer is tantamount to predicting the future. To support a
healthy future for the industry and its players, Ricardo takes a standards-first
approach to delivering software - ensuring solutions are
scalable, reusable and interoperable.
And with more data available and things connected than ever before,
the industry needs solutions that leverage data intelligently, deriving
the greatest value across every phase of the product development
process. It's another example of how collaboration is the ultimate
path to success.
Ricardo's experiences in defining and analyzing business strategies,
developing simulation and analysis software, designing and testing
vehicles systems and producing some of the most high-performant
propulsion systems gives our organization a unique vantage point to
optimize the design, deployment and operation of vehicles over time.
The Summit reinforced the fact that the transportation industry is a
cornerstone of our socio-economic well-being and we must collaborate
to make change happen now. We are all looking to make the
world a better place, but we can't do it alone.
A personal highlight was my one-on-one discussions with Dr. Ken
Washington, CTO at Ford; Monte Kaehr, Group VP of Advanced
Mobility at Toyota R&D; and Ulrich Homann, Corporate VP at
Microsoft, who crisply portrayed the complexities of designing the
vehicles of tomorrow that will better enable mobility. Their visions
traveled well beyond the technology or even the business of transport
and focused on the value technology can provide society and
the experiences we can create in the process.
It was also edifying to hear two execs from multi-billion-dollar equity
firms (Dominic Schiano, sr. advisor, The Gores Group and Josiah
Lindsay, managing director, Fortress Investment Group) discuss
how social good and " greening the portfolio " across energy and
transportation is driving investor consideration, with ESG - environment,
social and governance - becoming an increasingly important
factor in company valuations and the ability of emerging technologies
to affect change.
From energy policy and technology concept to product execution at
scale, Ricardo will continue applying our experience, processes and
insights to drive the risk out of innovation ... to create a sustainable
mobility future.
