CDK halts
10 quarters
of lost auto
business
David Muller

dmuller@crain.com

Dealership software giant CDK
Global in the first three months of
2019 reversed a yearslong trend of
losing dealership business in North
America as a new initiative to improve customer service rolled out
and as more dealerships signed up
for the company's new dealership
management system.
CDK, which last week reported improved revenue and earnings for its
fiscal third quarter, said that its total
North American auto sites - or those
that use CDK
products such as
its DMS software
- improved to
8,936 at the end of
March, up from
8,917 in the yearago period.
It marked the
Krzanich: Drive
first time in 10
Flex potential
quarters that CDK
was able to reverse North American
site losses, CEO Brian Krzanich said.
Krzanich said the company had a
50 percent year-over-year reduction
in the number of site losses during
the period as CDK continues to
change its culture to be "more customer-centric." The improvements
put CDK on track to close out its fiscal 2019, which ends in June, with
positive auto site growth year over
year, the company said.
Retention at smaller sites has been
driven by CDK's new DMS product,
Drive Flex, while retention among larger sites is being aided by the company's
Customer Success initiative, launched
in January, to improve support and service to dealership customers, Krzanich
said. Gains in newly acquired customers are being driven by a combination
of those factors, he said.
About two dozen dealerships had
signed up for Drive Flex by the end of
March, but Krzanich said he sees exponential growth opportunity. The
cloud-based product's flexible architecture is customizable for dealerships of a variety of sizes.
"We just believe that there is a population of at least 50,000 retail locations
globally for which Drive Flex can eventually be a viable DMS solution," Krzanich told analysts last week.
Dealership sign-up is expected to
build as certifications with automakers
are completed. So far that has only
happened with General Motors. CDK
is aiming to complete certification with
most major automakers "roughly" by
the end of this year, Krzanich said.
Meanwhile, the company expects a
year of transition in fiscal 2020 for its
website business after General Motors told dealers in January that they
would get new company-approved
vendor options. GM had been using
CDK as its exclusive, preferred provider of websites for Chevrolet, Buick
and GMC dealerships. CDK leaders
expect to see the financial impact of
that decision in the last three months
of its fiscal year ending June 30 and
also into fiscal 2020. It could present
a mild headwind on revenue in fiscal
2020, Krzanich said. a
