Reinhard Jung, Skoda CEO Reinhard Jung has spent his entire career with the Volkswagen group. He studied manufacturing technology in Lippe, Germany, and joined VW in 1974. His first assignments were as a project engineer in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. He later took on the role of vehicle production launch project manager in Argentina, Belgium and Yugoslavia. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he held various planning and logistics roles and from 1996 to 2002 was plant manager at VW’s Brunswick (Braunschweig in German) component factory. Jung became president of Volkswagen de Mexico in 2002 and two years later was named a member of the VW brand’s board for passenger vehicles, production and logistics. He took over as Skoda CEO in October 2007. What talent would you most like to have? To be more athletic. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would switch my age from 57 to 30. What is your favorite restaurant? One that is located on a beautiful beach, for example, a restaurant at the seaside in Acapulco, Mexico. Queen Elizabeth has asked Bentley to convert her two gas-guzzling V-8 Bentley State Limousines into more ecofriendly models running on biofuel. The conversion will, however, mean changing the engines in the One wants a greener V-8. queen’s cars. The custombuilt Arnage-based limos are currently powered by 6.7-liter eight-cylinder engines. When fitted to a standard Arnage, these units deliver fuel consumption of 19.5 liters per 100km – but standard models are almost 1.5 metric tons lighter than the behemoths in the royal fleet. Bentley says the royal family is a big supporter of its initiative to switch to biofuels and, naturally, the firm is delighted about its most famous customer’s green initiative. Bentley plans to introduce renewable-fuel powertrains on its entire range of luxury cars by 2012. By then, Bentley says 100 percent of its range will be compatible with renewable fuels, delivering significant savings in CO2 emissions. Maybach owners lose big The depreciation of a new car is an inevitable, if painful, fact of life. Some car buyers, however, are likely to feel that pain more acutely than others during the global economic downturn. Take for example the Toyota Aygo driver. According to the UK’s Parker’s Car Price Guide, owners of one of these fuel-sipping minicars would have seen the value of their asset depreciate by just £1,515 (about ¤1,630, or 18 percent of its new cost) in 2008 – the lowest cash depreciation on any car, says the guide. At the other end of the pain spectrum are those exclusive few who own the ultraluxury Maybach limousine. Parker’s tells us that the owners of these cars lost an eye-watering £128,000 (¤137,000, or 39 percent of its new cost) Pleasure and pain? in depreciation during the last 12 months. Perhaps it is now a case of: If you have to ask how much it depreciates, you can’t afford it. VW makes more than 3 million sausages a year. Don’t beat yourself up. award-winning commercial for the VW Polo featuring a singing dog that raised the ire of some animal-loving Brits. The dog was seen alternately singing happily or apparently quaking in fear, depending on whether it was inside or outside the confidence-inspiring Polo. That campaign generated 733 complaints but the Advertising Standards Authority decided not to investigate. In the latest VW advertisement, which promotes the sixth-generation Golf, a fictional VW designer is attacked by himself. The stylized, “Matrix”-like duels take place in a VW factory and after the designer defeats his clones, a tagline tells us: “Sometimes the only one you have to beat is yourself.” But, as VW’s advertising agency DDB is finding out, sometimes you also have to beat a belligerent British TV-watching public. The Advertising Standards Authority has so far received 672 complaints about the ad’s violent nature. This time the agency has decided to investigate whether Britain’s TV Advertising Standards Code has been broken. Volkswagen – Das Sausage Like the British with their fish ‘n’ chips, the Italians with their panini and French with their croque monsieur, the Germans have an indigenous favorite fast food. In their case it is currywurst, or curry sausage in English. But it’s not just at street vendors’ stalls after a heavy night in the beer hall that Germans like to enjoy this down-to-earth delicacy – essentially a curry-flavored sausage, liberally smothered in spicy ketchup and heavily sprinkled with yet more curry powder. Volkswagen annually produces more than 500 metric tons of the Indo-Teutonic dish to feed workers in its staff canteens. That’s 15,000 sausages a day or 3.3 million a year. And in November, VW’s sausage factory produced what it claims is the longest currywurst known to man – all 130 meters of it – as part of a TV telethon. The VW production lines evidently run as smoothly for sausages as they do for Sciroccos. VW ad irks Brits For the second time in recent months, a Volkswagen television ad in the UK has generated hundreds of complaints.
