Ablation 2.0, the most efficient
process for all PHS combinations
The combination of press hardenable steels (PHS) and laser welded blanks
(LWBs) is a winning formula. Together they enable OEMs to lightweight
even the most challenging car parts while improving their performance.
ArcelorMittal, Europe's leading supplier of PHS blank solutions, has now
introduced Ablation 2.0, the safest laser ablation process for all PHS
combinations.
The market for laser welded blanks (LWBs) has grown enormously over
the past few years with some vehicles containing more than 14 LWB
parts. Through its continuous improvement and innovation process,
ArcelorMittal's Tailored Blanks division has introduced Ablation 2.0,
a new process which facilitates higher quality welds.

Ablation 2.0 - why is it necessary?
Steels for hot stamping, such as Usibor® and Ductibor®, are delivered
with an aluminium-silicon coating. The coating prevents scale formation
and surface decarburization during the hot stamping process. It also
helps to protect the final part against corrosion. If the aluminium is not
removed it can migrate into the weld, weakening the connection.
To prevent aluminium pollution of the weld and ensure the long-term
integrity of LWBs, ArcelorMittal has developed a patented process
known as partial ablation. The process partially removes the aluminiumsilicon coating near the edge of the part to avoid excessive aluminium
in the weld. The intermetallic layer is intentionally kept, guaranteeing
corrosion protection. Partial ablation is the only safe process available for
ArcelorMittal's complete range of PHS grades and thicknesses.
Ablation 2.0 combines the best features of both partial ablation and filler
wire technology in a single production step for an increased productivity.
Steel matters
With Ablation 2.0 and its latest Usibor® and Ductibor® PHS grades for
hot stamping, ArcelorMittal gives OEMs new design opportunities. With
their low cost compared to alternative materials and excellent safety
performance, LWBs are ensuring that steel will remain the material of
choice for carmakers in the long-term.
