* SEPTEMBER 2016

2017 KIA RIO
Kia's fourth-generation subcompact (and
its best-selling model, globally) has a
more substantial look than the
previous version, due to an
all-new design and a longer and wider body plus a
slightly longer wheelbase.
The interior has also been
restyled and now appears
more sophisticated.

2017 BUICK LACROSSE

VISION MERCEDES-MAYBACH VISION 6 CONCEPT

Full-size sedans have fallen out of
favour as buyers shift into tall wagons. The latest LaCrosse shows, however, that Buick hasn't completely
given up on the category. The standard engine is a 310-horsepower 3.6litre V-6 that's backed by an eightspeed automatic transmission.
All-wheel-drive is optional.

If this ultra-luxurious coupe is an indication of the future, then
the future is all about long noses. And electricity. Power comes
from four electric motors - one for each wheel - that collectively produce 738 horsepower. Mercedes-Benz estimates the Vision
6 could hit 100 km/h from rest in less than four seconds and provide a range of up to 320 kilometres.

2017 AUDI A4
The sedan's sheetmetal comes in for modest revisions, the
overall dimensions have been slightly increased and the
weight has been cut by about 45 kilograms. The most significant update is the engine. For the time being, all that's
available is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that
makes 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
That's up from 220/258. A seven-speed paddle-shift transmission replaces the eight-speed automatic while the sixspeed manual is gone. The hotter S4 is about a year away.

CADILLAC ESCALA
This isn't the first time that Cadillac has presented an ultra-luxury concept at the Pebble Beach
Concours d' Elegance car show in California, but it seems more in the realm of production possibility than previous efforts. With the side profile of an Audi A7, the Escala shows the "next
iteration of Cadillac design language." The four-door is six inches longer than the CT6, which
is Cadillac's biggest sedan. The Escala comes with a turbocharged 4.2-litre V-8. In terms of leading-edge technology, three curved display screens are designed into the dash. - ANC

New Infiniti engine varies compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1

TEQUILA WASTE BECOMES CAR PARTS

WINNIPEG CORRESPONDENT

Instead of filling landfills with the
fibrous remains of agave - a byproduct
of making tequila - Ford
and tequila maker José
Cuervo are finding ways
to use the leftovers as a
strengthening agent in plastics.
The companies are developing new technologies to
efficiently employ discarded materials and fibres,
reducing the use of petrochemicals and
"light-weighting our vehicles for desired
fuel economy," said Debbie Mielewski,
Ford senior technical leader in sustainability research.
The fibres could find their way into
future wiring harnesses,
heating units
and storage
bins. Ford has
been researching bioplastics
since 2000 and
already uses
dandelions, soybeans, coconut fibres and
other organic materials in car parts.

INFINITI'S LATEST ENGINE DESIGN,
to appear Sept. 29 at the Paris Motor
Show in France, will vary the compression ratio according to demands on the
engine.
The Variable
CompressionTurbocharged
engine uses a
set of linkages attached to
the connecting
rod to alter the
upward travel of the piston.
This allows the engine's compression
ratio to vary between 8:1 for performance
(increased turbocharger boost pressure)
and 14:1 for efficiency.
"It is a revolutionary next step in
optimizing the efficiency of the internal
combustion engine," Infiniti President
Roland Krueger said. "This technological breakthrough delivers the power of a
high-performance 2.0-litre turbo gasoline
engine with a high level of efficiency at
the same time."
Infiniti said the engine offers improvements in fuel economy and emissions,
reduced noise and vibration and is lighter and more compact. The company first
started working on the design 20 years
ago.

CADILLAC GOES ORGANIC FOR LEDS
In the 1950s, scientists discovered that
certain organic compounds shine when
exposed to electric current. Fast-forward
60 years and that discovery is now the
basis for curved, thin-screen TVs.

Cadillac has applied the technology to
the Escala Concept Car, unveiled at the
Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach,
Calif., Aug. 18, with three
thin, curved displays using
Organic Light Emitting
Diode (OLED) technology.
OLEDs work by sandwiching two or more layers
of organic material between
two conductive layers, at
least one of which is transparent. By exciting certain
portions of each layer, a display can be
created, similar to how LCD or plasma
screens operate. Because the layers are
flexible, they can be shaped.
Jennifer Kraska, interior design director for the concept, said curved panels
give designers unprecedented freedom in
instrument-panel design, providing flexibility and high quality.
The Escala is Cadillac's vision of a
luxury sedan that would slot above the
CT6 in size. Cadillac President Johan de
Nysschen said it is under consideration
for production.

M-B DRIVES CLOSER TO AUTONOMOUS
The new "Drive Pilot" in the 2017
Merecedes-Benz E class sedan automates
a number of driving functions.
Drive Pilot follows the lane, even at
speed. It will stop the car to avoid a collision, changes lanes, brings the vehicle to
a stop if the driver becomes incapacitated and can
help make
panic
maneuverers.
The
E-Class
builds on
some of
the toys
introduced on the current S class, but
also has a number of features new to the
Mercedes lineup.
First is an emergency-braking system
that warns drivers and then takes over
if they don't react in time. It functions
on both static and moving obstacles. For
automated steering functions, from lane
keeping to lane changing, drivers have
to keep their hands on the wheel. It's all
part of Mercedes' insistence the system
is merely an aid and not for fully autonomous driving.
If drivers leave their hands off the
wheel long enough, the car will assume
they are incapacitated and gradually
brings the car to a stop with the hazards
flashing. The E class starts at $61,200.
