Lear strike: Unifor not taking globalization lying down
By JOHN IRWIN
TORONTO BUREAU

Union members fed up with stagnant
wages in the face of record profits

THE MAY STRIKE AT A
Toronto-area Lear Corp. seating plant was the latest labour
dispute to come as Unifor
shifts to a more aggressive bargaining strategy.
Unifor President Jerry Dias

said the union is bargaining
"a lot differently" today than
it has in the past. Workers in
the auto sector and elsewhere
are fed up with stagnant wages
and the impact of globalization, he said.

A more aggressive
approach in labour talks
apparently played a role in
recent strikes. The weeklong Lear strike in Ajax, Ont.,
which briefly shut down
production of the Dodge

Winnipeg whiteout
Jets' playoff
run creates a
spontaneous push
- white cars to the
front of the lot
By KELLY TAYLOR

WINNIPEG CORRESPONDENT

WITH THE WINNIPEG JETS'
unprecedented National
Hockey League playoff success, car dealers in the city
picked up on the Winnipeg
Whiteout, parking as many
white cars as possible along
their street fronts.
"At most of the stores, it's
just the staff that have taken it
upon themselves to do," said
Dan Murray, dealer principal
at Murray Chevrolet.
"There was no direction
from me on this."
For home playoff games, as
many as 34,000 people gather
outside Bell MTS Place, home
of the Jets, with another 15,321
inside. Almost all of the 49,000
are dressed in white. Streets
are closed, vendors are selling
food and a giant goal light is
placed in the crowd, lighting
whenever the Jets score.
"It is so good for the city
to see the number of people
downtown and the spirit of the
city," Murray said.
While the Jets are partially owned by Mark Chipman,
whose family owns 23
Manitoba dealerships as part
of the Birchwood Automotive

Group, it's not just Birchwood
stores getting in on the action.
From Regent Avenue in the
east to the Waverley Auto
Mall in the south or the Pointe
West Auto Park in the west,
the city's car industry is a sea
of white.
"It's everywhere," Murray
said. "I don't know that anyone is trying to gain business
from it. If anything, it's a bit
distracting, but it's so good
for the city."

'TIDAL WAVE'
Murray disputed any suggestion the whiteout
started with any
one dealership,
a point corroborated by another
dealer.
"I don't know who
started it and I don't
think there was a lot of
communication between
the dealers in making
this happen," said Jeff
Bachalo, general manager of Birchwood Honda
on Regent, located on the
Regent Avenue strip in east
Winnipeg. "I just think the
positive vibe in the city
that has been created by the
Winnipeg Jets has caused a
tidal wave of city pride."
Not so fast, says Don
Lachance, new-car sales
manager at Regent Avenue's
Vickar Chevrolet.
