non-profit Christian organization dedicated to supporting the poor.

Controversy hounds Uber and
Lyft as they open in Vancouver
AFTER YEARS OF REGULATORY
delays, the two major ride-hailing services launched in Metro Vancouver
in late January, though not without
encountering potholes along the way.
Uber and Lyft were opposed by the
local taxi industry and the B.C. government pushed back their rollout
until driver-licensing and insurance
details were negotiated. Cities also
debated the cost of business licences

Celebrity chef Vikram Vij, left, with

and per-ride taxes.
Uber said on its website that
Vancouver was the last major metropolitan area without ride-hailing.
Peter Lukomskyj, Lyft B.C. general
manager, kicked off the service by giving a ride to celebrity chef Vikram Vij
and a local charity's CEO to drop off
donations.
The taxi industry tried unsuccessfully to win a court injunction
against the service, arguing it competes unfairly. Surrey Mayor Doug
McCallum, siding with the taxi industry refused to issue business licences and sent bylaw officers to ticket
drivers who pick up fares. But a judge
granted Uber an injunction Feb. 7 preventing that. - Steve Mertl

High-tech finance-software
firm meets security standards

BURNABY, B.C. - INOVATEC, A
cloud-based software solutions provider, said it has completed its SOC
1 Type I and SOC 2 Type II audits,
demonstrating its ability to manage
and safeguard client data.
Systems and organization controls (SOC) auditing and testing was
performed by licensed CPA firm
KirkpatrickPrice, assessing Inovatec
controls that could affect clients' financial statements.
Inovatec information-security officer Christian Reina said successful
completion of the audits "provides our
clients with the assurance that the con-

trols and safeguards we employ to protect and secure their data are in line
with industry standards and best practices."
Inovatec clients rely on the company "to protect consumer information,"
said Joseph Kirkpatrick, president of
KirkpatrickPrice. Inovatec has implemented best practice controls demanded by its customers to address information security and compliance risks,
he said.
Inovatec aids financial institutions,
with a focus on automotive, equipment
and power-sports financing and leasing transactions. - Steve Mertl

Auto-show date changes to
ease competition for visitors

CALGARY - TIMING IS
everything and for the Calgary Motor
Dealers' Association (CMDA) that
means changing the dates of the 2020
Calgary International Auto and Truck
show.
Jim Gillespie, CMDA executive manager, expects bigger visitor
numbers in 2020 as a direct result of
the date change, because "we won't
be competing with Easter and the
[Calgary] Flames" hockey club.
The auto show will return to its traditional dates, March 11-15.
Tim Beach, dealer principal at
Charlesglen Toyota, was elected president of the association at its annual
meeting, Dec. 5. Terry Madison, CFO
at Jack Carter Chevrolet Buick GMC,
was elected vice-president.
