LETTING LOOSE A BIT ON THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF AUTOMOTIVE
PostEV purchase? Adios anxiety
It turns out that the fears
surrounding EV ownership
are little more than fears
RANGE ANXIETY, COLD-WEATHER performance
and battery degradation - top
concerns for people considering buying
electric vehicles - decline dramatically
after purchase, a study by the Canadian
Automobile Association (CAA) found. As
well, 97 per cent of current EV owners
would buy again, the survey found.
The CAA contracted with PlugShare
Research, which surveyed its network of
Canadian EV drivers as well as users of
the Canadian PlugShare app - 16,232 in
all - from Nov. 21 to Dec. 11, 2022.
Owners were asked to compare their
key concerns before and after purchasing.
Worries about range fell 37 percentage
points to 30 per cent, cold-weather
performance fears dropped 25 percentage
points to 33 per cent, and fears that their
batteries would degrade fell 41 percentage
points to 13 per cent.
Among the positives in comparing
their experiences to gasoline-powered
vehicles, 89 per cent of
respondents said they enjoy
driving EVs more, 95 per cent
said EVs are more affordable,
and 92 per cent said they are
quieter.
The key negatives from
the survey centred on public
charging, where 44 per cent
said availability remains a

concern, and longer trips, where 36 per
cent said they lack the confidence to take
longer road trips.
Most - 67 per cent - also still own a
gasoline-powered vehicle.
" We think this research into the actual
experiences of EV drivers in Canada
sheds an important light into where the
real pain points are and where potential
buyers can perhaps worry less, " said
CAA spokesman Ian Jack. - ANC

The Canada Safety Council's Sleep Tracks lets drivers nod off to the sounds of
Highway 401 and others in the comfort of their own homes.
SOUNDS LIKE A WAKE-UP CALL
Rather than to keep drivers
alert, there's a playlist of
road noise to show how
easy it is to nod off
A NEW INITIATIVE BY THE CANADA
Safety Council is intended to drive home
the perils of driving fatigue.
Sleep Tracks, a playlist of three popular
Canadian driving routes, replicates the
sound of long road trips. The council hopes
that it reminds drivers how sleep-inducing
road noise can be. According to the council,
21 per cent of all road crashes in Canada are
caused by fatigue.
" Sleep Tracks is not intended for drivers
to use while driving but, rather, serves
as a tool to raise awareness of the calming
effect of Canadian roads and drive home
the message that if the road can put you
to sleep at home, it can do the same while
you're behind the wheel, " council spokesman
Aaron Nilsen wrote in an email to
Automotive News Canada.
Sleep Tracks includes the sounds of
British Columbia's Coquihalla Highway,
Alberta's " notoriously dangerous " Highway
63 and Ontario's 401 Highway. It is available
on Spotify (http://wfp.to/056) and Apple
Podcasts (http://wfp.to/05j). -ANC
What's worse than when owners
can't tell their Teslas apart?
When Tesla cars
can't tell their
owners apart
A TESLA MODEL 3 DRIVER
in Vancouver must have felt
as though he took a detour
into an alternate reality.
Rajesh
Randev
was rushing
to pick up
his children
from school
when he
noticed his phone charger was
missing and his windshield was
cracked. He called his wife, who
didn't have an explanation.
The answer came from a
complete stranger: " After five,
10 minutes, I got a text on
my phone that said, 'Rajesh,
are you driving
[a] Tesla?' "
Randev told
Global News.
The man told
Randev he was
in the wrong car.
Randev said that
when he approached
his car parked on a Vancouver
street, a similar-looking Tesla
was next to it. His Tesla app
inadvertently opened the
stranger's car and allowed it to
be taken.
Randev was able to pick up
his kids and then drive to meet
the other owner for a swap.
" I was surprised how I was
able to drive someone else's car,
by mistake, for an hour and a
half while his [key] was in his
hand, " Randev said. " My family
is shocked. "
The other owner found
Randev's name and phone number
in documents in the Tesla,
using the same glitch to get into
Randev's car.
Randev said he would be
seeking answers from Tesla.
