Jan. 2024 sales beat Jan. 2019; does it matter?

Vehicle volumes are similar to pre-pandemic times,
but a 40-per-cent higher transaction price today and
bigger profit margins show that the market has moved on
that sales since the beginning of the pandemic
have topped sales before the pandemic
- which would indicate a return
to normal. But the reality is that normal
has moved on. All other indicators point
to an industry that has moved into a
more expensive and, in some cases, more
lucrative era.
Automakers sold an estimated
112,862 new vehicles last month in
Canada, a 14.9-per-cent increase over
the same month a year ago, according
to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants
(DAC).
And that was 1.5 per cent above the
111,225 reported by the Automotive News
Research & Data Center for January 2019,
the year before the COVID-19 pandemic
began.
Monthly figures are estimates because

The measures were outlined at the

COLD REALITY
By DAVID KENNEDY
T ORONTO BUREAU CHIEF
A JANUARY COLD SNAP
that sent temperatures plunging
into the negative double digits
from Edmonton to Chicago to
Montreal highlighted an enduring
electric-vehicle pain point, as
some drivers saw their range cut
nearly in half, while others faced
long wait times at charging stations.
EVs
lose about 30 per cent of
their range on average in freezing
conditions, according to a study of
18 popular models by Recurrent,
a U.S. analytics company. The
2021 Volkswagen ID4 lost the most
power, shedding 46 per cent of
its range. The 2021 and 2022 Audi
e-tron lost the least at 16 per cent.
Much of this loss is chalked up
to keeping drivers warm, turning
what is typically an EV efficiency
advantage on its head, said
Nathan Yang, chief product officer
at the Quebec City charging company
Flo.
Engines in gasoline vehicles
are usually 30 per cent efficient
and shed most of the remaining 70
per cent as " waste " heat, he said.
EV motors, on the other hand, use
70 per cent of the electricity they
take in, giving off little heat in the
process.
Frigid weather exposes
the vulnerabilities of
reduced range and
longer charging times
" In an EV, you have to take
that precious electricity . . . to heat
the cabin, " Yang said, while internal-combustion
engines can simply
use the waste heat they generate.
Yang: One way to improve
battery longevity in the cold is
to warm up the vehicle while
it's still plugged in. PHOTO: FLO
THE GRID GRIMACES
January's blast of Arctic air,
which dropped temperatures to
as low as -45 C in Edmonton, was
particularly frigid even for parts
of North America that regularly
experience cold winters. The
effects on EV drivers were quick
to manifest.
The Alberta Electric System
Operator (AESO), which runs
the province's electricity grid,
asked EV drivers to put off
charging to help prevent strain
on overburdened power infrastructure
on three successive
evenings.
