Welland plant will serve, but company
CEO Linda Hasenfratz told Automotive
News Canada last year that the Welland
location puts the plant within striking
distance of several auto assembly operations.
The
new plant is scheduled to start
making parts in February 2025.
During a panel discussion at the
Toronto conference, Borns said the major
investment required a " high-volume,
financially viable vehicle. "
" The business case with the customer
has to be very, very strong, " he said.
Linamar, based in Guelph, Ont., 100
kilometres west of Toronto, has also
stayed mum on the cost of the investment
in the new facility. On a financial
earnings call last spring, Hasenfratz said
only that the supplier anticipated elevated
capital expenditures as it prepared to
launch the plant.
FIRST N.A. SUPPLIER TO GO GIGA
Linamar disclosed plans for the gigacastings
site in May. It became the first
North American supplier to invest in the
technology, which produces very large
aluminum parts.
While aluminum die-casting is a
well-established manufacturing technique,
Tesla Inc. has been pushing " the
limits of what was possible " using
gigacasting over the past few years by
employing ever-larger presses to build
Welland plant early on. A portion of
the workforce has spent months honing
their skills using a " sister " die-cast
machine at Linamar's technical centre in
France, Borns said. Many workers will
have years of experience by the time the
Welland plant begins production, he said.

bigger parts, Borns said.
The Welland plant is expected to house
three presses with clamping forces of
6,100 tons (5,500 kilograms). The large
aluminum structural components made
will be up to 45 per cent lighter than the
stamped steel assemblies they replace.
Such weight savings improve battery
range.
While the new presses are larger than
anything Linamar has used to date, the
supplier is not new to aluminum die-casting.
It operates a plant with high-tonnage
machinery in North Carolina.
Linamar has leaned on expertise built
up over the years at that plant and hired
other leaders well-versed in the technology
as it gears up to launch.
Linamar also began staffing up the
iZEV PROGRAM
AT A GLANCE
* The iZEV program provides
a $5,000 rebate
for BEVs, as well as
PHEVs with electric
range greater than 49
kilometres. PHEVs
with less electric range
qualify for $2,500.
* The same eligibility
criteria regarding
pricing applies
to both categories.
Zero-emission passenger
cars starting
at less than $55,000
and higher-cost variants
up to $65,000
qualify for the incentives.
Larger vehicles
such as pickups, minivans
and SUVs must
have a base price of
less than $60,000, and
higher-cost variants
must start at less than
$70,000.
Tech tools are playing a role as
well. Linamar has invested heavily in
advanced computer-aided-engineering
software to simulate what it will see
when casting components in the real
world, Borns said.
" That helps really reduce the lead
time and helps us to scale up quicker, "
he said.
As the timeline to launch narrows,
Borns said, Linamar is working through
the remaining technical hurdles with its
automaker customer using a " simultaneous "
engineering process.
" They have on-site people, and literally
our engineering team and their engineering
team are working through issues
truly simultaneously in cooperation, " he
said.
Linamar's launch customer could also
be just the first of many. With the company
having gotten its nose ahead of other
North American suppliers on gigacasting,
automakers have taken notice,
Borns said.
" The interest from the OEMs is flowing
in now, different OEMs for potential
future investment, " he said. - ANC

NFI Group says its hydrogen

New Flyer buses will run with
Ballard hydrogen technology
VANCOUVER - FUEL CELL
pioneer Ballard Power Systems
of Vancouver, and NFI Group of
Winnipeg, have signed a long-term
supply agreement for a minimum
of 100 fuel-cell powerplants for transit-bus
deployments across North
America.
The Ballard fuel cells will power
NFI's next-generation New Flyer
Xcelsior Charge FC hydrogen buses
for distribution across the United
States and Canada, including in
California, Manitoba, Nevada, New
York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The fuel-cell engine modules will
be built primarily at Ballard's Bend,
Ore., facility, bringing the agreement
in compliance with the U.S. Buy
America program.
David Mucciacciaro, Ballard chief
commercial officer, said New Flyer
is " well positioned to deliver deployment
scale volumes " of hydrogen fuel
cell buses, particularly in the U.S.
market, where operators " increasingly
prefer them " for their range, short
refuelling times, availability and
cost-effective infrastructure requirements. "

Linamar matches donations
for local youth centre
GUELPH, ONT. - GROVE HUBS
Wellington Guelph raised $400,000
in December to support youth mental
health and wellness programing,
thanks in part to global parts supplier
Linamar Corp.
The company is among the largest
employers in and around Guelph,
100 kilometres west of Toronto, and
matched contributions of $200,000
from other donors during the monthlong
fundraising drive.
Jeff Hoffman, the interim executive
director of the youth centre, told
local news outlet Guelph Today that
the community support was vital to
Grove Hubs reaching its goal.
" The donations made by community
members, Linamar, and other supporting
organizations will allow us to
provide even more vital care needed
to address the ongoing mental health
crisis our local youth are facing. "
