Aging problem
 Keeping aging techs healthy and working is a key concern for franchised dealerships as the
auto industry continues to struggle with a shortage of qualifi ed wrench turners. Wear and
tear and repetitive stress injuries are reasons more aging techs are leaving dealerships in
favor of mobile repair services, which offer fl exible hours and less work. See story, Page 28.
 A 2020 study by the Automotive Training Managers Council showed the average age of auto
and truck techs was 47 and 51 for collision techs . The biggest segment of these techs was
in the 55-64 age category.
 There are 253,000 service techs in dealerships, according to the National Automobile
Dealers Association, and the auto industry faces an annual shortage of about 40,000.
That's why more and more dealerships are partnerning with high schools to recruit the next
generation of techs. See story, Page 15.
 A Cox Automotive service study showed 60% of dealers said hiring service techs is their
highest priority.

Sonic Tools focuses on helping technicians'

systems for its drawers that make fi nding,
retrieving and returning tools intuitive.
As for me, I turned 60 this spring. Th is
summer's project is my last engine-out job. I
plan to upgrade my toolbox so that I can do
brake jobs, oil changes and suspension work
on my cars. I have had a good run by never
getting seriously hurt. More modern tools will
help keep it that way. 
