NEAL AWARDS award was presented last month at a luncheon in New York. “Winning awards helps you attract top talent, and top talent enables you to do great editorial,” said Glenn Zorpette, executive editor of IEEE Spectrum, the monthly publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. “It also pushes the staff to reach above themselves and operate at maximum output.” Maximum output certainly was behind IEEE Spectrum’s June 2009 special focus on “Why Mars? Why Now?” With the Neal Awards as the goal, a full year’s worth of planning went into the eventual production of six separate sections on the challenges, strategies, science and financial considerations that would go into a future trip to the red planet. That was augmented by multimedia elements online. Most of the magazine’s 15-person editorial staff was involved in the effort, overseen by Senior Editor Jean Kumagai, who proposed the project. Associate Editor Sandra Upson and Photo Editor Randi Silberman Klett traveled to Houston and Costa Rica to report on the development of a new rocket engine; on-site interviews were conducted in Washington, D.C., and reports were filed from India and Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University on Mars-trip research. IEEE Spectrum, which won the Grand Neal Award in 2007 for Zorpette’s two-part series “Re-engineering Iraq,” took home another Neal award this year for best Web site in the larger-magazine category.
