People On the Move Engstrom succeeds Smith as Reed Elsevier CEO Reed Elsevier, parent company of Reed Business Information, announced that CEO Ian Smith has resigned “by Engstrom mutual agreement.” Erik Engstrom, CEO of Elsevier, succeeded Smith as CEO of Reed Elsevier. “Ian has had the difficult task of leading Reed Elsevier during unprecedentedly turbulent economic times,” Anthony Habgood, Reed Elsevier chairman, said in a statement. The CEO changeover was announced the same day the company provided an update on its financial performance. “The major professional markets, accounting for the majority of Reed Elsevier’s business, are proving more resilient than most, but not immune from late-cycle pressures given the subscription nature of much of the revenue. Advertising and promotion markets remain particularly impacted by global recession,” the company said in a news release. Reed Elsevier said its Reed Business Information unit, which publishes Variety and operates Reed Construction Data, “continues to face difficult trading conditions, particularly in advertising markets.” Regarding its announced plans to sell most of its controlled-circulation magazines in the U.S., Reed Elsevier said the divestment “is in progress.” The company also said Reed Exhibitions is seeing “overall revenue declines against a record year in 2008.” PROFILE Cintorino to lead digital push at Northstar base of great brands to work with and is now xecutives who can run e-media opera- looking to develop the online and events astions at b-to-b media companies are in pects as quickly as he can. In a statement, the company said, “Glenn Goldberg, president of McGraw-Hill Information & Media, has direct operating responsibility for McGraw-Hill Construction and will be assisted in day-to-day operations by Robert Stuono, senior VP-general manager of McGraw-Hill Con- struction.” When asked if Young’s departure was prompted by a lawsuit filed by competitor Reed Construction Data in October that alleged McGrawHill Construction had engaged in corporate espionage, a company spokesperson declined to comment beyond asserting: “We take the allegations seriously. We’re continuing to conduct an investigation, and we plan to vigorously defend ourselves against the lawsuit.” mediabusinessonline.com | December 2009 | Media Business | 25 http://www.mediabusinessonline.com
