PDM Event returns
to Telford for 2018
I

n line with a well-established tradition, Telford International Centre is
once again hosting PDM, the twoday UK exhibition and conference on
plastics design and manufacturing,
that is being staged this year on 1920 June for the twelfth time. The
show brings together industry experts, leaders and manufacturers in
Telford, in a region long known as
"plastics valley" thanks to the over
100 polymer-related companies, located there.
This year, the show will feature
over 90 exhibitors from product design companies, moulding machinery
suppliers, toolmakers, rapid prototyping specialists, moulders and mouldmakers, plastics recycling specialists,
masterbatch specialists, software suppliers and materials testing specialists.

One draw at this year's PDM will be
the series of four live half-hour injection moulding workshops organised
by machinery heavyweight Sumitomo
(SHI) Demag over two days on its
stand. For the practical demonstrations, academy trainers and process
engineers James Hines and Darren
Vater-Hutchison will use one of the
company's newest all-electric 50
tonne IntElect, guiding delegates
through key topics to enhance precision, cycle times and component
quality. The four half-hour courses
will offer a combination of practical
and theory-based modules on how
best to calculate clamp force; achieving cavity balance and shot-to-shot
consistency, how to calculate cooling
time, and how to achieve greater repeatable process consistency on high
precision parts.
"There is a serious skills shortage
in the UK injection moulding industry
and the easiest way to address it is to

upskill our existing moulders to work
with the latest equipment and techniques," explained Nigel Flowers,
managing director of Sumitomo (SHI)
Demag UK.

In the Design and Differentiation
sessions, Keith Freeguard, director,
Axion Consulting will explain the importance of "circular thinking" in sustainable product design.

PDM Conference

Exhibitors' highlights

Among the key topics to be addressed during the free-to-attend
two-day conference will be Brexit, the
Chinese import ban as well as the recent demonisation of plastics by media and politicians.
Philip Law, director general of the
British Plastics Federation (BPF) will
open the PDM conference with a keynote speech titled "Where is the plastics industry headed?".
Featuring speakers from different
sectors of the UK plastics industry, the
conference sessions will include examples of innovative approaches in
design, new technology within
moulding in both materials and machinery - as well as scientific discoveries in the field.
The Sustainability sessions on day
two will include a presentation on stopping ocean plastics by professor Ed Kosior, CEO and head consultant, Nextek,
and another on the use of recycled materials in the future, led by Stephen,
Mancey, CEO Europe, Logoplaste.

Among the exhibitors this year
are a number of major plastics
machinery manufacturers or
their UK sales agents, including:

STV Machinery
First time PDM exhibitor STV Machinery will be exhibiting a Yizumi A5 series 260-tonne machine for two-component moulding and an FE series
60-tonne all-electric machine at the
show. Founded in 2002, Yizumi is one
