CMG Granulators celebrates
40th anniversary
CMG marked its fortieth birthday
with an open house event at its
headquarters in Budrio, Italy followed
by a conference held at the Ferrari
Museum in Modena. Plastics News
Europe attended the festivities

W

hen four decades ago, Vittorio Cané Martelli started
CMG SpA, he could hardly
have foreseen that his company
would grow into the internationally
respected manufacturer of shredders
and granulators it is today. And Martelli is still active, still highly engaged
with the daily life of the business.
When Plastics News Europe asked
him about this achievement, his reply
was therefore characteristic: "I am
proud, of course I am proud, but
more than proud, I am very happy. It
makes me happy and thankful to see
all this today."
But, he added, it did not come
easily. Hard work, combined with a
passion for his products, entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to getting the job done proved to be the
recipe for success.
It also helped that he was no
stranger to running a business: he
joined his family's business after graduating as a bookkeeper from school.

His father and a partner had started
out building tractors and other agricultural
equipment
and
later
branched out into drilling rigs. When
his father died, he took over the management of the company for several
years before selling his share of the
business to his father's business partner - but retaining ownership of the
property.

A new direction
As packaging was an up and coming
sector in the Bologna region at that
time, Martelli's next venture was a
packaging firm called Mac Pack,
which he purchased from a friend. In
1979, he then founded CMG - the
letters stand for Cané Martelli and
Guidazzoli, the name of his business
partner - to make tray formers for
Mac Pack, before moving into other
production sectors, as well. Building
on the years of experience and expertise in mechanical processing gained
during his years at the family business, in 1980, the young company
started producing components for
the injection units of Negri Bossi's
injection moulding machines. This
business relationship with Negri
Bossi, a plastics machinery producer
in the Milan area, continues to this
very day. A year later, Negri Bossi
asked CMG to design and build a
granulator able to grind up sprues,
rejected products and other processing waste, which could then be recycled back into the processing stream.
They gave CMG two Cumberland

granulators as models to study and
to replicate - the basis for CMG's later success in this area. CMG started
making granulators for Negri Bossi.
Cumberland, noticing the design and
performance of the new granulators,
then asked CMG to start building
these machines under the Cumberland name - a deal that lasted for sixteen years, until Cumberland was acquired by AEC Sterling.

A focus on plastics
In the years that followed, CMG concentrated on building the brand, nationally and internationally.
From the start, CMG had been designing machines specifically for the
